1
Why Study Myths?Allusions
Why Study Myths?
  • Students will be able to find and reference
allusions in stories music, and literature

Allusions
2
What Are Allusions
  • They are references to make a point
  • They are used to express something by using an
    already known term
  • Allusions are just another way of getting a
    picture in your mind

3
Where and Why are allusions used?
  • Allusions are used by writers, artists,
musicians, composers, and people in every day
    life
  • for an example if two people are talking to each
other and one person compares the other to a
story character, then that person is making an
allusion, We will explain more about it later.

4
Similes
  • Similes are comparing to different things
together by saying like, or as. Writers often
    use it.
  • An example of a Simile is He hops like a
rabbit, of course we know that the person is not
a rabbit, simply that the writer is comparing the
    person to a rabbit.

5
Metaphors
  • Metaphors are comparing two different things to
each other by making that thing have the objects
characteristics. Again writers often use this
  • An example of a Metaphor is He has rabbits feet
that help him hop. Of course we know that the
person does not have rabbit feet only that the
writer gives an example of how well he hops.

6
How do Allusions differ form Similes and Metaphors
7
  • If you did not know who Peter Cotton Tail from
his story then you would not understand his
allusion, and not able to make this reference.
You would be confused and not able to comprehend
    the work.

8
Examples Of Allusions
  • Maybe you have heard of some of the allusions,
that you have heard in your life?
  • An example of when you might have heard That
child sleeps more than Rip Van Winkle! You
parents would be comparing you to the old legend
of Rip Van Winkle, where a man slept for ages,
they are saying you have done the same.

9
How many Allusions can you think of?
  • And why and how would you use them???

10
  • Now you can understand Allusions in Myths and how
    to use them when needed.
