SIDS (SUDDEN INFANT DEATH SYNDROME) whaddup?
2
WHAT IS SIDS?
  • Also know as crib death
  • the unexplained death of an apparently healthy
    infant, usually during sleep
  • Biological cause is unknown by the medical world
  • Occurs in 1-2 per 1000 born
  • Occurs between 12 8 AM
  • Usually affects babies from 2 two 6 months

3
CAUSES OF SIDS
  • While exact cause is unkown, one important
leading factor is a respitory tract infection
  • Other risks that can lead to SIDS
  • The baby sleeps on his or her stomach.
  • The baby's mother smoked during pregnancy.
  • The mother was under the age of twenty at
    pregnancy.
  • The mother abuses drugs.
  • The mother received little or no prenatal (before
    birth) care.
  • The baby was born prematurely (early) or with a
    low birth weight.
  • The baby lives in house where someone smokes.
  • The baby is male (SIDS is more common for infant
    boys that girls (61)).
  • Baby is a member of a minority or low-income
    family.
  • Baby's family has a history of Sudden Infant
    Death Syndrome.

4
MEDICAL THEORIES ON SIDS
  • MEDICAL DISORDERS
  • - lack of oxygen ? suffocation
  • - unbalanced blood composition ? brain failure
  • - faulty nervous system ? inability to wake from
    low 02
  • -- mechanism failure
  • -- faulty immune system

5
MEDICAL THEORIES (continued)
  • PHYSICAL SURROUNDINGS
  • - sleeping enviornment
  • -- soft vs. hard bedding
  • -- position
  • -- atmosphere (temp., room)

SYMPTOMS?
  • Due to its name, SUDDEN infant death syndrome has
    no warning symptoms
  • Death occurs suddenly and with little notice
  • Baby usually does not cry ? death is silent and
    painless

IN 2000
Deaths per 1000
7
DIAGNOSIS?
  • Because the disease has such little explanation
and testing, it is diagnosed through exclusion
  • Relative to each case, if all other possible
causes of death are negative and no other cause
    can be found
  • SIDS can be diagnosed

8
TREATMENT?
  • Because the disease cannot be diagnosed until
    death, treatment does not exist
  • Best treatment is prevention
  • Treatment for parents
  • Counseling Support Groups

9
PREVENTION
  • PUT YOUR BABY IN A GOOD SLEEPING POSITION
  • - side or back to prevent smothering
  • -ENSURE THE BIRTH MOTHER TAKES NECESSARY MEASURES
    DURING PRENATAL CARE
  • SLEEP YO BABY ON A FIRM MATTRESS
  • MAKE SURE THE ROOM TEMP. IS BAREABLE
  • BREAST FEED BABY
  • KEEP BABYS ROOM SMOKE FREE
  • ELECTRONICALLY MONITOR BABY
  • - breathing alarm

10
