    existing steel
  • Place new plate
  • Clean existing steel surfaces
  • Manipulate 300 degree, 500 lb steel plate

  • Concluded that plates were improperly tempered
    and therefore extremely brittle

    fracture critical inspection
  • BN find cracked ½ plate on EB bridge
  • Traffic reduced to one lane on each structure-
    after much discussion, coordination between FHWA,
    KYTC, ODOT later WB reopened
  • KYTC removes EB truck traffic ( 3 ton limit) to
    reduce loading
  • Lane closure used for hardness testing by UK Ted
    Hopwood
  • Emergency repair contract designed to replace 4
    plates on EB bridge

Conclusion
  • 10 more non-critical plates need to be replaced
  • Through much coordinated effort and open dialogue
    with the public and the press we can confidently
    provide a safe highway and adequate mobility
    while also taking all necessary precautions.
