2Why should we care?
- Increasing use of CMS in higher education
- Users expect customization
- Accountability need to prove return on
investment - Libraries not considered in original CMS design
barriers remain
3Best Practices Recommendations
- Macro-Level Library Courseware Involvement
MaLLCI - Working with developers to insert a global
library presence - Micro-Level Library Courseware Involvement
MiLLCI - Working with faculty to provide customized
library instruction resource at course level
4MaLLCI
- OPAC and database links
- Global pathfinders and help sheets
- Document delivery services
- Virtual reference-desk services
5MiLLCI
- Library instruction handouts
- Recommended databases and resources for
assignment - Tutorials
- RSS feeds
- Citing information
- Contact information for librarian
- Questionnaire for follow-up assessment

20 Courseware trends
- Nearly 3.2 million students were taking at least
one online course during the fall 2005 term, a
substantial increase over the 2.3 million
reported the previous year. (Sloan C, 2006) - In 2003, 57 percent of academic leaders rated the
learning outcomes in online education as the same
or superior to those in face-to-face. (Sloan C,
2006) - 2/3 faculty who initially use courseware continue
after 1st course (Morgan, 2003)
- Fall 1999, 1 faculty member using Bb
- Spring 2008, 187 faculty are using Bb
- 383 full-time faculty, which means that approx.
49 of our faculty are using Bb. - Approximately 4,675 students
- A project growth in online enrollment of 20
percent a year is expected
21Mansfield Bb Trends
- In the last 60 days 3,251 separate students
logged into Bb. - This is from a total of 3,338 students which is
98 of student body. - 2001- 90 Courses Listed, 64 faculty using Bb.

22Wrap-up
- Macro level
- Collaborating with campus CMS staff or committee
- Embedding librarys links within all campus CMS
course sites - Communicating with faculty so that they are aware
of librarys presence in courseware
23Wrap-up
- Micro level
