Poverty and vulnerability to infection

• Distinction between the risk of infection and the
  risk of impact
• In the early days a disease of the mobile
• Changed? Now a disease of poverty?
• But wealthier countries in SSA have higher
  prevalence.
• Lower income individuals within countries have
  lower risk.

The relationship is complex

• Gender inequality and power relations
• Mobility causes and consequences
• Nutrition and susceptibility
• Careful to consider what is being measured
• The wealthy of the poor may be at greatest risk

Risk of Impact

• HIV is impoverishing
• Illness and death affect households financial and
  human resources
• Decreasing supply / Increasing demand
• At times slow moving
• The implications of these impacts for families
  and children will be determined by the starting
  level of these resources or their access to
  support

• The relationship between poverty and risk of HIV
  infection is complex
• This complexity has to be appreciated if
  preventative responses are to most effective
• Poverty amplifies the impact of HIV
