Brief History of Hotspots
  • Hotspots are based on the 2.4GHz frequency band.
  • Developed by the military and was licensed for
    ISM(Industrial, Scientific, and Medical) use.
  • Throughout the late 90s and early 00s, spectrum
was deregulated, making it an unlicensed band
    available for public use.
  • Hotspot was born, with cost of WiFi hardware and
    consumer devices still relatively expensive.
  • Oct 26, 2002 Intel committed to spend 150
million over the next 2-3 years to make sure WiFi
    succeeded.

4
Where We Are Today
  • According to In-Stat/MDR there has been
significant growth in WiFi enabled notebook PCs.
Over 55.0 percent of the 32.1 million notebook
PCs shipped in 2003 contained embedded WiFi
    adapters.
  • More than 45 million business laptops (two-thirds
of the total in use) are WiFi capable.
  • The cost of WiFi hardware and customer devices is
coming down. Making it affordable to more
people. Thus, more consumers are adapting to the
    technology.
  • Moving from an early adopter market to mass
    adoption.
  • Its not magic beans anymore. People are
starting to understand the many ways they can use
WiFi. Once they try it, they are hooked.

5
Where is the Future Headed ?
  • Parks Associates notes that 95 of laptops will
    have built-in WiFi by 2005.
  • WiFi devices including laptops, PDAs,
Smartphones, becoming smaller, faster, and less
    expensive with more built-in features.
  • United Nations International Telecommunication
Union report predicts, more than 20 million
people in the US, will use WiFi by 2007.
  • WiFi will be mainstream. People will use WiFi
like cell phones are used today. People will
demand a high-quality and secure service.
