Title: Personal Pronouns

1
Personal Pronouns
2
Subject Pronouns
  • Subject pronouns are used to replace a noun in a
sentence to avoid repeating the name over and
    over.
  • Ex Mr Crookshank drove home, then Mr Crookshank
went to the store and finally Mr Crookshank went
    to bed.
  • Here we can replace the Mr Crookshank with the
    subject pronoun he.

3
Subject Pronouns
  • Here are the following German Subject Pronouns
    and their English counterparts.
  • ich- I wir- we
  • du- you(sing/informal) ihr- yall
  • er/sie/es- he/she/it Sie- you(s/p/f)
  • sie- they
  • Notice that the work ich is not capitalized in
German unless it begins a sentence.

4
The word it
  • Up til now you have learned that the word es
    means it.
  • This is the case if the noun you are substituting
    is neuter.
  • If the noun you are replacing is feminine or
masculine you must use sie or er.
  • Ex
  • Der Tisch ist gross. Die Tafel ist schmutzig.
  • Er ist gross. Sie ist schmutzig.

5
Direct Object Pronouns
  • Of course we all know that the accusative case
refers to direct objects, or word that are
receiving the action of the verb.
  • We also remember that der changes to den and
    ein changes to einen.
  • A change also occurs when we replace a direct
    object with a pronoun.

6
Direct Object Pronouns
  • Think of the following English sentence
  • I see Mr Crookshank.
  • If we are to replace the Direct Object with a
    pronoun we would choose he
  • I see he.
  • However this is not correct English.
  • I see him.
  • There, now its perfect. Our pronouns change too
when the are in the role of the direct object!

7
Direct Objects
  • Lets look at the following German examples
  • Ich sehe Mr. Crookshank
  • Ich sehe er.
  • Ich sehe ihn.
  • Er liebt du.
  • Er liebt dich.

8
Direct Object Pronouns
  • Here are the direct object pronouns. Notice that
    sie,sie,Sie dont change!
  • ich- mich wir-uns
  • du- dich ihr- euch
  • er/sie/es- ihn/sie/es sie/Sie-sie/Sie

9
