Title: Survey engagement: A new approach to maximising survey response

1
  • Survey engagement A new approach to maximising
    survey response
  • Prior research suggests that people are likely to
participate in activities if they see the
activity as being of value and interest, and if
they can see the value of their contribution
  • Research into student engagement has
highlighted the value of institutions stimulating
    students involvement in university activities
  • Institutions need ways to enhance students
    engagement in university surveys
  • Enhancing students engagement in surveys will
enhance the quality of estimates and hence the
fidelity and integrity of associated quality
    assurance and improvement processes

2
  • The Survey Engagement Model
  • The Survey Engagement Model provides an
    efficient, theoretically-informed and efficient
means of capturing best practice for maximising
    survey response
  • This approach goes beyond identifying correlates
of increased response, to propose an integrated
management approach for understanding how surveys
can be integrated into each students university
    experience
  • The Survey Engagement Model deconstructs the
    survey cycle into four phases
  • presurvey planning and evaluation
  • presurvey promotion
  • capturing attention
  • stimulating completion and return

3
  • National study of survey engagement
  • Study of survey engagement conducted to
investigate graduates engagement with the GCA
    national surveys
  • Survey instrument developed using both
    theoretical and qualitative and quantitative
    empirical methods (national stakeholder
    consultations, research reviews, focus groups,
    cognitive interviews, expert reviews, pilot
    tests)
  • Population defined as 2004 graduates from all
Australian universities who have studied onshore
  • Eight universities each used a stratified,
two-stage and probabilistic sampling strategy to
select between 300 and 400 graduates into their
    survey sample
  • Additional data on institutions and individuals
    was collected
  • Results below are reported as the percentage of
respondents who answered yes to each
    dichotomously scored question
