11 12 Hat
Generally, caps have peaks and hats have
brims. Boys often wear sun hats and girls sun
bonnets when they sit, stand or walk in the hot
sun.
A good hat just means a good hat, but a
bad hat can mean a bad egg. Naturally we dislike
bad hats. Nor do we like persons who often talk
through their hats. We take off our hats to those
who are quietly working hard.
.
Do you eat hats? This is certainly an
absurd question. Yet you can say, Ill eat my
hat if Hong Kong loses the match tomorrow.
13Pan
When we speak of the word pan, we
naturally think of word pancake. Pancakes are
made of flour, milk, eggs, etc. As the name
suggests, they are cooked in a frying pan.
Jump out of the frying pan into the fire is a
saying. It means move out of one trouble into
worse trouble. Suppose a boy had just recovered
from a cold when he broke his arm in a traffic
accident. Then we can say he jumped out of the
frying pan into the fire.
The Phrase a flash in the pan refers to a
person or a thing that starts out well but does
not continue. The new coach of the baseball
team was a flash in the pan. That is to say, he
only enjoyed short-lived success.

16Night Capriccio
By Lin Yiwei
In the quiet of the night, accompanied
by the rhythmic clicking of pendulum and a cup of
coffee, I spread out a sheet of letter paper,
streams of thoughts flowing through the nib of my
pen.
Memorable to me is my warm, comfortable
home, with the sitting-room brimful of laughter,
with Mum and Dads caring words, and the wrinkles
ploughed by time into their faces. My home is so
faraway in space, but so near in my minds eye. I
hang on to my precious memory, keeping it safe in
my diary, and in the depths of my heart where it
wont fade away or be altered by the outside
world. Wherever I go, I firmly believe, my
beloved ones will keep a close watch on me, like
the twinkling stars, giving me their blessings
and encouragement. Even if we are separated by
vast oceans, our hearts will beat as one. It is
this deep love and faith that gives me the
strength to brave storms and any hardship in my
life.
17Night Capriccio
By Lin Yiwei
Now that I have
entered the orbit I planned for myself, I should
begin running in it. When the tender bud
stretches out its first leaf in the morning
breeze, giving out its pleasant fragrance when
the newly-fledged eaglet takes wing, soaring into
the immense heaven and when the new-born colt
draws its first breath of pure and sweet air,
staring at the boundless grassland, they cheer
how wonderful life is! And so is mine.
The new life, a nut that was then
cracked open, may undergo rapids, may bathe in
the sunlight may be full of hardships and
brambles, may be permeated with flowers and
applause. Enjoying what life blesses me with and
performing what it entrusts to me, I shall live
without fear or regret. With an unclouded mind,
an undaunted heart and a steadfast faith, I know
I shall fulfill my hope. The shimmering stars
will be the witness of all these. Drawing
back the thoughts, I drink some coffee and look
up at the night sky. That starry heaven! With a
flash, a meteor shoots across the night sky,
leaving a graceful arc. How bright the meteor is!
I marvel how far it reaches!
