Title: Greater educational and work success

1
Greater educational and work success
  • A wider view of intelligence now includes
    emotional intelligence
  • Emotional and social competencies have been shown
to be more influential than cognitive for
    personal, career and academic success
  • Programmes that teach about social and emotional
competencies have been shown to result in
improved school attendance, higher motivation and
    higher morale
  • Workplaces increasingly focus on teamwork,
    communication and management skills

2
Improvements in behaviour
  • The successful programmes taught emotional and
social competencies that focused on the whole
    school environment
  • Programmes that taught social and emotional
competencies were effective in decreasing early
    behaviour problems

3
Increased inclusion
  • Teaching children with challenging behaviour the
kind of skills they needed to fit into the
classroom more easily while helping classmates to
support their efforts helped difficult pupils to
stay in the classroom without detriment to the
    learning of other children

4
Improved Learning
  • Some emotions such as anger and sadness can block
learning while a sense of wellbeing or feeling
safe and valued promote learning. Learning to
    manage emotions can assist learning.
  • We need emotions to think clearly, prioritise,
decide and plan. People cannot think clearly when
    dominated by powerful emotions, especially
    negative ones

5
Greater social cohesion
  • There is an increasing acceptance of emotion in
public and private life. We need to become more
skilled in this area if we aim to be effective in
    our communities.
  • Changes in society mean that complex challenges
    increasingly demand emotional and social
    competence

6
Improvements to mental health
  • Research is showing that children suffer from a
high level of mental health problems
  • Children with social and emotional problems are
prone to mental illness in later life and have
    increased likelihood of antisocial behaviour,
    drug misuse and offending
  • Conversely children with high levels of social
and emotional competence do better at school, at
    work and in personal life
