Title: Sawflies Hymenoptera, Symphyta of the Carpathian Basin

1
Sawflies (Hymenoptera, Symphyta) of the
Carpathian Basin
  • Ladislav Roller
  • Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences

2
order Hymenoptera suborder Symphyta World 8000
species of 14 families Europe 1350 species of 12
families
  • Ecology
  • - important part of plantfeeders
  • in temperate and boreal forests
  • - outbreak potency
  • polinators
  • significant biomass - part
  • of the food chain

3
Carpathian Basin as defined by Móczár et al.
(1972)

Summary works on the Symphyta fauna of Carpathian
basin

  • Faunistic research
  • from Scopoli (1772), Schrank (1781) to the
    present
  • 201 recorded faunistic works
  • Slovakia 59 Ukraine 19
  • Hungaria 45 Austria 15
  • Romania 46 Poland 9
  • past Yugoslavia 8
  • - grey literature - local faunistic papers may
    still be hidden
  • - a few works reflecting regular collecting
    activity
  • problematic validity of published, especially
    historical data

6
Numbers of recorded symphytan species in the
Carpathian Basin (CB), in European countries with
well known fauna and in Slovakia
7
The present state of local faunistic research of
Symphyta in Slovakia (number of recorded species
per square of DBFS)
8
Local species richness of Symphyta Sawflies -
association with host plants - ecotonal

  • Sawfly endemism in the Carpathian Basin (CB)
  • association with endemic plant species not known
  • several endemic species were recorded outside
    CB recently
  • Calameuta idolon (Ros.), Elinora sabariensis
    (Mocs.), Taxonus alboscutellatus Niezab.

  • Alnus viridis
  • Heterarthrus fruticolum Erm. UA Carpathians
  • Alnus viridis
  • Hemichroa monticola Erm. UA Carpathians
  • Fenella arenariae Zomb. HU, Potentilla
    arenaria
  • Fenella catenata Zomb. HU
  • potential candidates
  • 3 tenthredinid species (Haris, 2001) HU
  • 2 tenthredinid species (Haris , 2001) UA-RO
    Carpathians

10
Conclusions 711 species of 12 families in CB
near to actual species richness exploration
within CB uneven and insufficient - significant
number of species was recorded in single
finding - fauna of many orographic units and
nature preserved areas unknown future
objectives 1. data recovery from grey
literature 2. revision of historical/published
data 3. study of local museal collections 4.
extensive study of local faunas using effective
collecting methods (e.g. Malaise trap) 5.
taxonomic elaboration of problematic taxa (e.g.
Nematinae, Tenthredininae) 6. ecological,
zoogeographic studies - ecosozological
evaluation
