Title: The Aeolus 3000

1
The Aeolus 3000
  • David Baker
  • James Brooks
  • Nelson Llewellyn
  • Josh Moore
  • Ben Sievers

2
Introduction
  • Background
  • Why do we need another weather monitoring system?
  • Objectives
  • Inexpensive
  • Accessible
  • Modular
  • Easily Configurable
  • Accurate

3
System Overview
4
Major Components
  • David Baker Sensors
  • James Brooks Power Supply
  • Josh Moore Sensor Interface Unit
  • Nelson Llewellyn Server Software
  • Ben Sievers Web Interface

5
Sensors
  • Five different sensors designed for prototype
  • Temperature, Pressure, Humidity, Wind speed and
    Wind Direction
  • Most will have an analog output that will run
into its own A/D converter (ADC08831)
  • Will be connected by a standard Ethernet cable
  • Temperature sensor

6
Sensor Interface Unit
  • Responsible for collecting Sensor Data and
    transmitting it to the server.
  • Receive sensor data over a serial connection.
  • Each sensor type will have a 4-bit ID
  • Ethernet port for TCP/IP communication

7
Sensor Interface Unit Cont.
  • Rabbit 3000 Microprocessor
  • 6 Asynchronous Serial Ports
  • 56 Shared Digital I/O Lines plenty for IDs
  • Operates at 29.5 MHz and has low-power modes
  • Onboard Ethernet Port
  • Development Kit (300) includes C compiler and
    TCP/IP stack

8
Server
  • Socket Communications
  • Server Program Flow

9
Socket Communications
10
Server Program Flow
11
Web Interface
  • Implemented using ASP code
  • Query made using a SQL statement
  • Test database set up by column, real data will be
    coming in by rows
  • Alternatives to ASP and Microsoft IIS
  • Improvements to the current implementation

12
Power
  • Server Standard
  • Sensor Interface Unit
  • Solar Powered
  • Minimum Array Size 22.3 in2
  • Minimum Output 2.67 Wh/day
  • Batteries
  • Minimum Capacity 485mAh

13
Schedule
  • What weve accomplished
  • Working knowledge of the Rabbit 3000
  • Demonstrated A/D conversion
  • Demonstrated network communication
  • Performed worst case power modeling
  • Successfully used ASP to format data for display

14
Schedule Continued
  • Immediate Future Plans
  • Code basic data acquisition and transmission
    functions for the Rabbit
  • Adding database functionality to our server
    program
  • Purchase batteries and solar panel
  • Purchase pressure and humidity sensors
  • Design wind sensors
  • Further ASP development

15
Budget
  • This compares favorably to our price target of
    1500

16
Conclusions
  • Our Design Seems to be Meeting our Objectives
  • Rabbit 3000 is a great fit
  • We are on Schedule
  • Completed our SEED Lab goals without any major
    setbacks
  • Under budget
