Title: The Servanthood and Submission of Jesus

1
The Servanthood and Submission of Jesus
  • David Schütz
  • Noble Birth of the Prophet
  • 15th March, 2008

2
The Footwashing
  • John 13 1 Now before the festival of the
Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to
depart from this world and go to the Father.
Having loved his own who were in the world, he
loved them to the end. 2 The devil had already
put it into the heart of Judas son of Simon
    Iscariot to betray him.
  • And during supper 3 Jesus, knowing that the
Father had given all things into his hands, and
that he had come from God and was going to God, 4
got up from the table, took off his outer robe,
and tied a towel around himself. 5 Then he poured
water into a basin and began to wash the
disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel
    that was tied around him

3
The Footwashing
  • 12 After he had washed their feet, had put on his
robe, and had returned to the table, he said to
them, Do you know what I have done to you? 13
You call me Teacher and Lordand you are right,
for that is what I am. 14 So if I, your Lord and
Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to
    wash one anothers feet.
  • 15 For I have set you an example, that you also
should do as I have done to you. 16 Very truly, I
tell you, servants are not greater than their
master, nor are messengers greater than the one
    who sent them

4
Jesus, the one who serves
  • Luke 22 24 A dispute also arose among them as to
which one of them was to be regarded as the
greatest. 25 But he said to them,
  • The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them and
those in authority over them are called
benefactors. 26 But not so with you rather the
greatest among you must become like the youngest,
and the leader like one who serves (gk. ho
    diakonon).
  • 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the
table or the one who serves? Is it not the one at
the table? But I am among you as one who serves.

5
Servant in biblical languages
  • Hebrew ebed servant, slave
  • amah maidservant
  • Greek diakonos servant, minister
  • doulos servant, slave
  • pais child, servant huios son

6
Servanthood in the Gospels
  • Mark 9 35 And he sat down and called the
twelve and he said to them, If any one would be
first, he must be last of all and servant gk.
diakonos of all. 36 And he took a child gk.
paidion young child, and put him in the midst
of them and taking him in his arms, he said to
them, 37 Whoever receives one such child in my
name receives me and whoever receives me,
receives not me but him who sent me.

7
Jesus, the Suffering Servant
  • Matthew 12 15 Many followed him Jesus, and he
healed them all, 16 and ordered them not to make
him known. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken
    by the prophet Isaiah (421ff)
  • 18 Behold, my servant gk. pais orig. heb.
ebed whom I have chosen, my beloved with whom
my soul is well pleased. I will put my Spirit
upon him, and he shall proclaim justice to the
    Gentiles.
  • 19 He will not wrangle or cry aloud, nor will any
one hear his voice in the streets 20 he will not
break a bruised reed or quench a smoldering wick,
till he brings justice to victory 21 and in his
    name will the Gentiles hope.

8
Isaiahs Servant Songs
  • Isaiah 52 13 Behold, my servant Heb. ebed
shall prosper, he shall be exalted and lifted up,
and shall be very high. 14 His appearance was so
marred, beyond human semblance, and his form
beyond that of the sons of men
  • 10 Yet it was the will of the Lord to bruise him
he has put him to grief when he makes himself an
offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, he
shall prolong his days 11 by his knowledge
shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to
be accounted righteous and he shall bear their
    iniquities.

Jesus Prays in the Garden
  • Mark 14 32 They went to a place called
Gethsemane and he said to his disciples, Sit
    here while I pray.
  • 33 He took with him Peter and James and John, and
began to be distressed and agitated. 34 And he
said to them, I am deeply grieved, even to
death remain here, and keep awake.
  • 35 And going a little farther, he threw himself
on the ground and prayed that, if it were
possible, the hour might pass from him.
  • 36 He said, Abba, Father, for you all things are
possible remove this cup from me yet, not what
I want, but what you want.

10
Jesus Prays in the Garden
  • 37 He came and found them sleeping and he said
to Peter, Simon, are you asleep? Could you not
keep awake one hour? 38 Keep awake and pray that
you may not come into the time of trial the
spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
  • 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the
    same words.
  • 40 And once more he came and found them sleeping,
for their eyes were very heavy and they did not
know what to say to him.
  • 41 He came a third time and said to them, Are
you still sleeping and taking your rest? Enough!
The hour has come the Son of Man is betrayed
into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us be
going. See, my betrayer is at hand.

11
Jesus, the Obedient Son
  • Hebrews 5 7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus
offered up prayers and supplications, with loud
cries and tears, to the one who was able to save
him from death, and he was heard because of his
    reverent submission.
  • 8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience
through what he suffered 9 and having been made
perfect, he became the source of eternal
salvation for all who obey him.

12
Jesus, the Obedient Son
  • Hebrews 3 1 Therefore, holy brethren, who share
in a heavenly call, consider Jesus, the apostle
and high priest of our confession.
  • 2 He was faithful to him who appointed him, just
as Moses also was faithful in Gods house. 3 Yet
Jesus has been counted worthy of as much more
glory than Moses as the builder of a house has
    more honor than the house.
  • 5 Now Moses was faithful in all Gods house as a
servant, to testify to the things that were to be
spoken later, 6 but Christ was faithful over
    Gods house as a son.

13
Jesus does the will of God
  • John 4 34 Jesus said to them, My food is to do
the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish
    his work.
  • 30 I can do nothing on my own authority as I
hear, I judge and my judgment is just, because I
seek not my own will but the will of him who sent
    me.
  • 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my
own will, but the will of him who sent me 39 and
this is the will of him who sent me, that I
should lose nothing of all that he has given me,
but raise it up at the last day. 40 For this is
the will of my Father, that every one who sees
the Son and believes in him should have eternal
life and I will raise him up at the last day.

The Servant Song Phil 25-11
  • 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours
    in Christ Jesus, 6 who,
  • though he was in the form of God, did not count
equality with God a thing to be grasped,
  • 7 but emptied himself, taking the form of a
servant Gk. Doulos slave, being born in the
    likeness of men.
  • 8 And being found in human form he humbled
himself and became obedient unto death, even
    death on a cross.
  • 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and
bestowed on him the name which is above every
    name,
  • 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should
bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
  • 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
