2Roasting
- Who has heard about roasting?
- Who has used it?
- Why do you think Robin Schmahl asked us to be
here? - Who do you think we are?
- Why would you roast not only soybeans but also
corn, wheat, barley, sorghum?
3What is Grain Roasting?
- Roast Soybeans,Corn,Wheat,Oats,Sorghum,Barley
etc. - Roasting with the ROAST-A-MATIC Grain Roaster is
a process in which the grain flows through the
open flame, increasing T.D.N. in the raw
soybeans, the toxic enzymes (urease and
lipoxdose) are destroyed, the oil and lecithin
are retained, and are turned into golden,
peanutty-flavored, nutritious beans with roasted
aroma, bringing out the best qualities of the
full fat soybeans. Roasting grains converts
saturated fat into unsaturated fat, destroys
molds and changes carbohydrates(starches) to
dextrin (sugar)
4History
- High soluble protein diets in the 1980s with
haylage raised questions for more by-pass - Dr. Larry Satter, U.W.-Madison co-workers
developed heat treating roasting of soybeans,
not to be confused with extruding, similar but
lower bypass - Midwest Grain Roasters from Illinois, started to
bring into Wisconsin portable roasting - Tests for effectiveness of roasting and bypass
- values Trypsin inhibitor correlation to
by-pass
5Roasting industry
- Cottage Grove Coop - stationary
- Midwest Grain Roasters 6 mobile roasters since
1989 - Vita Plus - stationary
- Soy-Plus somewhere in Iowa (actually remove
some oil/fat
6What this means to you
- No not one more headache..
- Roasting corn until now has been for calves
feed whole - and some salvage - Major mold and yeast reduction and quite
effective in toxin and DONS mycotoxin - Wheat and barley led the way roasting really
made a difference - Milk ? 1-5 lbs/cow/day,? Butterfat, ?
Protein and solids
7Think about it
- Have you heard of genetic changes
- corn feeds hard
- horney or vitreousness starch c/o Dr. Joe
Lauer, U.W. Extension Agr. - staygreen corn silage synchronous
- Starch feeding different digestibility
availability levels feed different sources
8Objective Roasting Corn background
- TMR particle size
- Feeding of feed grade starch
- Corn silage kernel processing
- High Moisture corn rolling
- F.A.R.M.E. Institute Homer New York
- NeL .93 to roasted 1.20 NeL
- Dr. Mike Hutjens saw some benefits
- You wonder?
9So did we..
- Discussion with Dr. Randy Shaver, U.W.
- Dr. Glen Broderick, USDA Forage Center
- He did in vitro study
- 2005 study with 40 cows
- He is here to tell you FIRST his findings
- Study supported by the Wisconsin Corn growers and
Midwest Grain Roasters a.o.

12Digestibility Availability ?
13Corn in the diet
- If you feed ______ pounds per cow/day
- Feed 1/3 regular ground corn
- Feed 1/3 High moisture corn over 25 M.
- Feed 1/3 Roasted corn
- Less stress, ?acidosis, healthier cows
- You could feed actually less corn
14Management Stress reducers
- Mold reduction
- Toxin effect
- Palatability carmelization
- Applied drying cost savings when roasted
- At optimum moisture of 17 to 20 Moisture
- Extended storage capabilities
- Calves fed whole kernel
- Lactating cows grind 800 microns

17Local Roasting
- Control from harvest on
- Improved storage control
- Keep the margin at home
- Know the origin
- Trust the nutrient values and tests
- You know the genetics and history
18Economics
- Controlled shrink you have your own grain
- Out-of pocket expense reduced
- Payments can reflect tax management strategies
- Middleman issues can be reduced with
willingness to manage risk - Roasting cost 25 to 40 per ton
- Roast 5 lbs maximum .10

ROASTING PROCESS FLOW Scale beans, Deliver
weighed beans to a roaster access point so they
can be roasted Prior to roasting into a surge
bin. Cone bottom bin. Overhead bin. At the time
of roasting Using trucks or wagons, when load is
roasted switching to the next load Using trucks
or wagons, delivered into a stationary wagon to
be roasted. ( this is better than switching
loads) Roast beans. Steep beans. In a wagon or
truck that is then delivered to storage site. (
cooling is needed at this time) In a wagon (at
least 300 bushel) that is stationary over an
auger that fills a storage bin with a floor and
fan for cooling 2 wagons work even better.
Longer steep, lower roasting temp unload wagon
1 while filling 2, Place wagons facing each
other over the auger. Roasted corn does not have
to be steeped. Just let it cool of or ventilate
it until cool.
