  • A topographic map is a mathematically determined
representation of a portion of the earth's
surface systematically plotted to scale on a
    plane surface.

  • MARGINAL INFORMATION
  • The information on the back of a map which helps
us read and interpret a map.

8
  • Marginal information consists of
  • Graphic (bar) scales.
  • Declination diagram.
  • Representative fraction.

11
  • Representative fraction (rf)
  • is the ratio of horizontal distance on the map to
the corresponding horizontal distance on the
    ground.

12
Representative fractionindicates the size and
detail of the map.

Map Scales
15
  • 1/8 1/4 1/2 MD/GD
  • A denominator of a lower value indicates a larger
    scale map.

16
  • SMALL SCALE
  • 11,000,000
  • AND
  • SMALLER
  • Used for general planning and high echelon
    strategic studies.
  • The standard small scale map is 11,000,000.

17
  • MEDIUM SCALE
  • LARGER THAN 11,000,000
  • BUT
  • SMALLER THAN 175,000
  • Used for planning of operations, concentration of
    troops and supplies.
  • The standard medium scale map is 1250,000.

18
  • LARGE SCALE
  • 175,000
  • AND LARGER
  • Used for tactical, technical and administrative
    needs of field units.
  • The standard large scale map is 150,000.
  • Your OCS maps are 125,000 scale maps.

20
  • Graphic (bar) scales are used to convert map
    distance.

21
Consists of different units of measure.
22
Primary scale - full units of measure.
23
Extension scale- usually tenths of units of
measure.

  • DECLINATION DIAGRAM
  • Indicates the angular relationship of the three
    norths.

26
  • 3 TYPES OF NORTH
  • TRUE NORTH - A line from any position on the
surface to the north pole. ()
  • MAGNETIC NORTH - The direction to the north
    magnetic pole.(arrow)
  • GRID NORTH - The north that is established by the
vertical grid lines on the map. (Gn or y)

COLORS
30
  • Colors show a contrast between the different
features on a map providing a natural and
    realistic appearance.

31
  • BLACK

-The majority of cultural or man-made features.
32
(No Transcript)
33

GRIDS
43
  • DEFINITION OF A GRID LINES

-A series of straight lines intersecting at right
angles and forming a series of squares.
44
  • PRINCIPLE DIGITS
  • Two digits that appear at the end of each grid
    line.
  • Occur at intervals along the grid lines across
    the face of the map.

45
VERTICAL GRID LINES
Function as eastern and western boundary.
POT OT MOTTOB
46
HORIZONTAL GRID LINES
LEFT SIDE TO RIGHT SIDE
Function as southern and northern boundary.
47
THE BASIC MAP READING RULE
  • READ RIGHT
  • THEN UP

48

49
  • The coordinates of a grid square are found by
combining the values of the vertical and
horizontal grid lines that form the lower
left-hand corner of the grid square.

50
FINDING A 4 DIGIT GRID
51
4-DIGIT GRID COORD. 97/63
52
  • Four digit grid coordinate gets you to within
1000 square meters of a point.
  • We can get closer!!!

53
COORDINATE SCALE
Divides a grid square more accurately.
54
  • Six digit grid coordinate gets you to within 100
    square meters of a point.
  • Eight digit grid coordinate gets you to within 10
    square meters of a point.

MEASURING DISTANCE
DISTANCE SCALE
READ THE FINE PRINT!!!!
71
  • STRAIGHT LINE DISTANCE
  • "As the crow flies
  • Lay a straight piece of paper on the map so that
the edge of paper touches both points.
  • Make tick marks on paper at each point.

72
(No Transcript)
73
  • CONT.
  • Move paper to the graphic bar scale and read the
ground distance between the two points.
  • First determine the full units of measure on the
primary scale. Then determine the remaining
tenths of units of measure on the extension
    scale.
  • Use the scale that measures in the unit of
    measure desired.

76
  • IRREGULAR DISTANCE
  • To measure distance along a winding road, stream,
    or any other curved line.
  • Make a tick mark on one end of the paper and
place it at the point from which the curved line
    is to be measured.
  • Align the edge of the paper along a straight
portion, and make a tic mark on both map and
paper at the end of the aligned position. For
accuracy of measurement of the distance make tic
marks at any point that the straight edge of the
paper leaves the center of the road, trail, or
    stream.
