Title: Ground Zero, NYC March 2002
1Ground Zero, NYC March 2002
This is the view from the deck facing the site
from the east on Church Street. Due to the size
of the area it took three shots to fit it all in.
Even if youve been there before, as I have,
its hard to imagine the sheer magnitude of the
damage without seeing it firsthand.
2This flag was hanging at the entrance to the
observation deck. Thousands of visitors have
added signatures and messages to the flag and the
entire wood walkway to and from the platform. It
wasnt easy but I managed to find a small area
to add my name to the flag on the lower left
corner.
3This is St. Pauls Chapel, which backs to the
WTC site. Amazingly the church only sustained
some minor damage to grave stones in the
attacks. Currently the chapel is being used as
headquarters for the emergency personnel still
working there. The fence surrounding the church
has numerous banners, flags, hats, shirts, etc.
in tribute to those who died and those effected
by the tragedies of 9/11/01.
4Here are a few of the buildings in the immediate
area. The one above is covered in a large black
mesh covering. It is on the south end of the site
and appeared to suffer major damage. The
buildings (above right) are on the west side and
also were damaged. Mostly just broken and boarded
windows with a few areas of structural damage.
The picture to the right shows a small glimpse
into the actual site. Most of the debris has
been removed and work is being done deep in the
hole. As a result there wasnt much to see inside
the site from the deck.
5However, there were plenty of tributes to the
victims on the deck. There was a six foot metal
statue of the towers along with a small pile of
debris from the site. Posters hung on the wall
in tribute to the many emergency workers who
died helping others. Below are memorials from
the PAPD, NYFD and NYPD. Each department has the
names of those members lost listed around an
angel. Further down the wall was a large banner
listing the names of all the victims from the
World Trade Centers, American Airlines Flight 11
and United Airlines 175.
6The inscription reads In Loving Memory of all
who died here on September 11, 2001. For the
known and unknown, found and unfound. May They
Rest In Peace.
7Although we have regrouped and we will rebuild,
its more important that we remember. They may
take American lives, but America will live
forever. God Bless the USA.
