Title: Lab BIOL 2101 notebooks

1
Lab BIOL 2101 notebooks
2
A Working Lab notebook
  • Maintain this notebook throughout your course for
    all experiments.
  • The lab notebook is used as a study tool for
exams, or as a place to write rough drafts of
labs ( mentioned in class) that are going to be
submitted along with your Formal Lab.

3
A Working Lab notebook
  • Put a title page and your name on your lab
    notebook
  • The lab notebook should reflect good
    documentation organization of your work.
  • Keep notebooks up to date (including a table of
contents) and have experiments separated by
    section..

4
A Working Lab notebook
  • Keeping a notebook will help you organize your
thoughts and provide you with a place to write
down your ideas and plans for lab experiments.
  • The data from this working lab notebook will
assist you to write your formal lab notebook.

5
A Working Lab notebook
  • What type of notebook do you need?
  • A bound composition book is the only type of
notebook to be used as the lab notebook and
another book for formal Lab report

6
A Working Lab notebook
  • What should you put in your notebook and how
    should it be structured?
  • Start on a fresh page. At the top, write the
date, time, and title of experiment and other
    related activity.
  • Any planning you do prior to lab, (calculations,
the sequence of steps in methods, which lab
partners will do what) can be recorded.
  • Read each lab experiment prior to lab days and
write the following sections prior to lab

7
A Working Lab notebook
  • What should you put in your notebook and how
    should it be structured?
  • Title of the lab
  • Partners for the lab Who are your partners?
(partners to be written in lab).
  • Objectives
  • Materials to be used ?
  • Equipments List the types of equipment to be
used and will be provided at start of each lab.
  • Methodology Write in bullets form the protocol
to be used for the experiment.
  • Write an overview of each set up the experiment?
and what is expected in the following week if
    needed.

8
A Working Lab notebook
  • Some examples of what might be included in a
    multi-week lab
  • Week 1..set up experiment and write what you
will expect the following week if the experiment
runs for more than a week.
  • Week 2..any supplements to your experiment?
(should be written prior to session). What is
expected from your observations (should be
written prior to lab). Record any changes to
original set up (to be written prior to attending
the lab) and confirm these changes during during
lab example changes in the growth of c-Fern.
  • Week 3continue observation if needed. Record
    all final observations as required.

9
A Working Lab notebook
  • What should you put in your notebook and how
    should it be structured?
  • Hypothesis what is the hypotheses you are
    testing
  • Predictions?
  • Data Show all your raw data and rough work. Show
the formulas to be used to analyze or summarize
    your data.
  • Data analysis How to analyse data? Any
    statistical package/software software needed?
(This data will help drawing graphs, tables,
charts in your formal lab report). How you will
summarize the data and make inferences about your
data. (For example Median, Mean, Mode, Standard
deviation, how will you calculate p value, etc.)
  • Conclusions How will you interprete the data?
and how does it relate to the hypothesis? Brief
notes are appropriate here since this will
assists in the formal lab report.

10
A Formal Lab notebook/Formal Lab report
  • You are required to maintain Formal Lab notebook
    for C-Fern
  • Or you may submit the formal lab report either in
the form of a Formal Lab notebook or in the form
of stapled sheets in a file ( Refer doc Formal
    lab report).
