Why Buildings ???
Energy demand by Sector.
Energy demand by Fuel.
  • To produce 1 Unit of electricity, we release 1
    kg of CO2.
  • India responsible for 300 million metric tons of
    CO2.
  • We are 5th largest contributor to the world

Building Regulation of India
  • Delhi Govt. and few other states have issued the
Notification for mandatory use of Solar Water
heating in all residential building above 500sqm
    area, Educational Institutions, commercial
    organization like hotels, Hospitals, Guest
    houses, Canteens
  • MOEF (Ministry of Environment Forest)
regulation encourage 30 of new building energy
consumption to be met by Solar Energy
  • TERI LEED Rating System promoted by CII also
encourage up to 20 of building energy need to be
    met by solar

? Energy Savings
  • For every 1000 liters of water heated from room
    temperature (25C) to 80C, approximate
equivalent energy savings per day are as follows
  • Example Savings from a 15,000 liters per day
    (lpd) _at_ 80C
  • Area required
  • 15,000lpd / 1000 liters x 10 collectors 150
    Collectors
  • i.e. 150 x 3.5 525 sqm or 5650 sqft.
  • Savings against electric and diesel based
    heaters
  • 15,000 lpd/1000 liters x 45 Units 675
    Units/day or Rs 3375/day
  • 15,000 lpd/1000 liters x 5.3 liters 80 lts/day
    or RS 3000/day.

Refer to Thumb Rule table.
16
? Financials
  • All investments made for Solar technologies by a
commercial organization can claim 80 tax
    depreciation on year 1.
  • Banks offer low interest loans to popularize
    SWHS across India
  • 2 for individuals.
  • 3 for institutional users like colleges and
    hostels.
  • 5 for commercial industrial users.

17

    1 X 35 70000 Kcals 70000X4.18kJ per day
  • 70X4.18X300X0.2777kwH or 24300 units
  • Assuming a cost of Rs 6 per unit this has
resulted in savings exceeding Rs 1.45 Lacs per
    annum
  • With 80 depreciation on the Capital cost of
investment in non conventional energy generating
equipment, the client recovered the cost of the
    system within 2.5 years.
  • The system is of the highest quality and expected
