The GT/Emory programThe melting pot approach
  • Wendy C. Newstetter
  • Director of Learning Sciences Research

2
Program Goals
  • Create an educational model which integrates and
transforms different cultures of students through
    innovative graduate coursework and research.
  • Develop program elements which integrate biology,
medicine and engineering in order to provide
students with a strong understanding of
biomedical systems from the cellular level to
    whole body.
  • Develop educational interventions appropriate to
    enhancing self directed learning towards
advancing the field of biomedical engineering.

BME Fundamentals Course
  • This course promotes integration of engineering
    and biomedical principals/approaches.
  • The course exposes students to areas in
biomedical engineering to guide their ability to
choose a technical depth coreand addresses the
point that we should not teach technical depth,
    but integration.
  • An integrated PBL and engineering course covering
    core concepts in BME
  • PBL will be used to introduce students to
    biomedical problems and motivate engineering
    solutions
  • Engineering topics will dovetail with PBL
problems and allow students to do quantitative
    PBL solutions
  • 5 to 6 modules incorporating engineering
    fundamentals, modeling and biomedical relevance
  • Each module will end with a modeling solution and
    assessment
