Building Character. Inspiring Confidence.
Workshops for Youth and Families is a nonprofit
organization whose mission is to foster personal
leadership and resiliency in youth and families
through programs that inspire positive growth and
change.

Did you know? One million children have been
affected by divorce every year since 1972thats
25 ½ million children. 25 percent of all
newborns today have no official
father. (Relevant statistics Submitted to Josh
McDowell by Dennis Rainey for Biola University
Graduation Speech May 13, 1998.)
- Did you know?
- 39 percent of teens were offered, sold or given
an illegal drug on campus. - 33 percent of teens have had sexual intercourse
with one or more people during the past three
months - 20 percent of girls and 15 percent of boys
seriously considered suicide. - (From the Arizona Youth Risk Behavior Survey on
9th-12th grade Arizona Students 2003 and 2005)
Nurture. Strengthen. Succeed.
Did you know? According to a study in the Journal
of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry Almost 1 in 3 children live in a
single-parent household. 1 out of every 3
births in 1996 was to an unmarried mother.
Parents spend 40 less time with their children
today than a generation ago. (John P. Robinson,
Caring for Kids, American Demographics (July
1989) 52). (Why Are Kids So Angry? H. Chris
Slane III, M.A. Director of Research 1999 -
Family First)(p. 7)

4Whos in a Workshop?
Dr. Frances Mills-Yerger is program director and
founder of Workshops for Youth and Families. For
more than 25 years, Dr. Franny has presented
educational workshops for pre-teens and teens,
women and families throughout the country. She
is the recipient of several prestigious awards
for her lifetime commitment to youth, including
KEZ 99.9 Woman of the Year Award in 2005.
Leadership Team consists of working adults with
advanced training, skills and experience which
enables them to be highly involved with the
presentation and facilitation of Workshop
activities under the direction of Dr.
Mills-Yerger. As former Peer Leaders, the
Leadership Team provides Workshop participants
and Peer Leaders with outstanding role models who
share the life experiences which have contributed
to their success and growth.
Peer Leaders provide a sincere and personalized
approach to assisting the participants in feeling
safe and comfortable at the Workshop. In addition
to creating a learning environment, this group of
65 mentors model high self-esteem behaviors for
the participants. Each volunteer Peer Leader
gives more than 300 hours a year for a minimum of
three years to mentor youth at Workshop. This
highly unique peer-to-peer mentorship model
earned Workshops for Youth and Families the
coveted Scottsdale Chamber of Commerce Sterling
Award in 2002.

5How has Workshop impacted the community?
Dear Mom and Dad, Something I will never
forget is that everybody, even me, got up in
front of everyone and said their fears. Some of
them were really heartbreaking. I was surprised
that I got really connected to my family at
workshop. I hope to bring back support and love
to my family. I appreciate you both, I just
sometimes don't show it and I am so sorry. Love,
N. Workshop Participant

Winner Dr. Frances Mills-Yerger
We have come to believe that, even in
families that function relatively well, there is
a value in having resources outside the nuclear
family for children to use. Leadership Workshop
fulfills this role better than anything we have
experienced, or have even heard of... Workshop
also provides a unique environment for kids to
feel affirmed and uplifted. So many of our
cultural influences make kids feel bad about
themselves...While Leadership Workshop does not
promise to, and does not provide a path to a
stress-free family life, it provides a set of
tools that allow individuals and families to work
through inevitable difficulties in a genuine,
respectful, non-toxic way.William PowellFormer
Board Member, Parent of two participants and a
Peer Leader
2003 Scottsdale Leadership Spirit of Community
Leadership Award Recipient
Dear Dad, I know you believe in me enough
to know I will be able to dwell in this safe
environment. What I have learned is that people
like and deserve true and sincere apologies, and
how to control my inner brat. I know we don't
always get along, but I really know you love me.
I thought I was going to be the only one with
family problems but I wasn't even close! I hope I
can bring back to our family that I am going to
control my brat and cope with (name withheld)
until this whole thing is over. And, I really
want to become more respectful of people's
feelings! Thanks!Love, K. Workshop Participant

6How has Workshop impacted the community?
2007 State of Arizona Office of the Governor
Volunteer Award Recognition for Community Service
Through Workshop, I have learned that being
challenged to grow is a good thing. You cannot
help others until you help and love yourself
first. I have also learned how important it is to
get involved in your community and with your
peers, because they are the people that will help
you, teach you and allow you to grow and become a
better person in our beautiful journey through
life. Workshop has offered me a chance to give
back to a program that made a difference in my
life, and has given me continued growth and
awareness, which is developing a heart for
leadership and helping, as well as a lifetime
habit of caring about other people.Kendra
Mitchell Volunteer Peer Leader 2001-2003
Our son, Adam, was a workshop participant
prior to becoming a Peer Leader. The program and
the people have made a tremendous difference in
his life. I credit "Dr. Franny and friends" with
helping him to develop his personal coping skills
while giving him the guidance to provide
leadership and support to so many other kids. I
continue to highly recommend the program to
friends and people that I encounter in both my
work and academic circles. It has been a
privilege to be associated with all of the people
who work to make this happen.Sally Stamp Parent

2001 Athena Award Nominee
Dear Sponsor, I'm writing to thank you for
believing in me and sending me to Workshop. What
surprised me was at first I had a negative
attitude towards this workshop, but I actually
started getting into it with my feelings and
emotions. I met so many wonderful people here. I
want to bring to my family all the leadership and
knowledge I have learned into my every day life.
This has been such a wonderful experience and I
think everyone in my family should experience
this... I feel like Ive rejuvenated myself. I
feel that Im a new person mentally and
physically. Sincerely, D. Workshop Participant
