Title: Superconducting Sputtered quarter wave cavity

1
Superconducting Sputtered quarter wave cavity
  • M. Pasini, CERN AB/RF

2
The proposal
  • Develop, build and test prototypes of a low
    (ß4.5), medium (ß 7.6) and high (ß12.1)
energy superconducting 101 MHz quarter wave
cavities based on the sputtering of a thin film
of niobium (Nb) on copper (Cu). The goal is to
achieve 6MV/m of effective accelerating gradient
with a power dissipation of less than 7 W in
    operational configuration.

3
Motivation 1/2
  • Post acceleration of weak radioactive ion beams
can benefit enormously from the sputtering
technology, since it provides a very stable
environment given its mechanical properties in
    cold condition.
  • The improved stability would manifest into a
lower system complexity, hence reducing the
    capital and operating costs.
  • European and non-European projects could benefit
from the results of the research activity
    (SPIRAL-II, SPES, ISAC-II, FAIR-NUSTAR, ANU,
    collaboration with CI)

4
Motivation 2/2
  • Why now? The planned energy up-grade of the
REX-Isolde can provide a suitable test bench.
  • This research activity would aim at an industrial
involvement so that future technology transfer
    could be envisage.
