IEC 62507Basic rules for identification
systems2007-05-10
  • Per-Åke Svensson / Hiroaki Ikeda
  • TC 3, for TC 100/AGS on 2007-05-16

2
Content of the presentation
  • Background
  • Reasons
  • Proposal
  • Acceptance
  • Content of the proposal
  • Scope
  • Introduction
  • Requirements for the documentation of
    identification systems
  • Identification in different contexts
  • Annexes
  • Initial discussion items
  • Recommendation to TC 100/AGS

3
Reasons
  • Listed as Stage 0 work since a number of years
  • Some material from other standards
  • Irrelevant comments on other standards
  • Basic for the operation of information systems
  • The ongoing splitting/merging of companies makes
identification no longer an company internal
    matter

4
Proposal
  • The project proposal was circulated as document
    3/810/NP in
  • IEC TC 3 and available to approx. 50 other IEC
    TC/SCs
  • ISO TC 10 Technical product documentation
  • into JTC 1 and ITU via IEC-ISO-ITU MoUMG for
    e-business

5
Acceptance
  • IEC TC 3 approved, experts from 5 NCs
  • ISO TC 10 Technical product documentation
approved, but not enough with experts
  • The circulation via IEC-ISO-ITU MoUMG for
e-business resulted in comments and liaison
    statements from ITU and GS1.
  • The result is documented in 3/836/RVN
  • Project IEC 62507 started with TC 3/PT 39 as
working group (presently 11 nominated experts).

6
Scope (initial)
BULLETED TEXT
  • This standard specifies basic requirements for
identification systems for the identification of
objects (such as products, items, documents,
    database entries, etc.) including requirements
for the application of identifiers in computer
sensible form, and requirements for their
    interchange.
  • The specification of a physical file formats
required for such an interchange is not included
in this standard, nor is possible physical
marking or labelling for the identification of
    objects dealt with.

7
Content of the standard
  • Introduction
  • Purpose of identifiers
  • Unambiguouity, domain, identification system,
  • Referencing and traceability
  • Permanence
  • Methods for the creation of identification
    numbers
  • without significance related to the identified
    object
  • with some significance

8
Content of the standard
  • Requirements for the documentation of an
    identification system
  • Domain
  • Kinds of identified objects
  • Rules for the construction of identification
    numbers
  • Rules for the management over time
  • Tools

9
Content of the standard
  • Identification within an organizational context
  • Types, occurrences, individuals
  • Identification within a global context
  • Identification within a system/product context
  • Identification within a library/catalogue context

10
Content of the standard
  • Comments to specific kinds of identifiers
  • Identification of documents
  • Identification of products
  • Identification of packages

11
Annexes?
  • Identification versus classification
  • Commonly occurring kinds of objects
  • Configurable product concepts
  • Examples of global domains
  • EXPRESS model

12
Initial discussion items
  • The Scope Can we really produce a general
standard or do we need to exclude some
    application areas?
  • The original focus was on the needs in document
    and product identification areas.
  • Relation to existing, already defined
    identification systems
  • The intent is not to invent another one, but to
lay down general rules for any system (a meta
standard) applicable to those who need to define
    one.
  • Should it refer to/list existing systems?
Maintenance problems for such a listing? The
original intent was just to name some as
    examples.

13
Recommendation to TC 100/AGS
  • To study coverage and applicability of IEC 62507
  • In focusing it to the domain of TC 100 coverage
  • For identification of such as
  • Audio, video and multimedia systems and equipment
  • Local connected devices, terminals, equipment and
    subsystems
  • Remote devices, terminals and equipment in
    general
  • Multimedia information domain to be managed and
    maintained
