  beginning)
• Studied art at Academy of San Carlos in Mexico
  City since he was 10 years old.
• So good, he was sponsored by the governor of
  Veracruz to study in Europe.
• Studied cubism with Picasso and Braque in Europe
• Gradually shifted to Post-Impressionism

Controversy

• Mural commissioned by NYC to be painted in
  Rockefeller Center
• Painting contained society women drinking
  alcohol, pictures of cells (sexually transmitted
  diseases), and the famous Lenin portion
  (depicting communism)
• Upset Rockefeller and NYC---Rivera refused to
  change the painting and it was demolished

Frida Kahlo

• Born in 1907 in Mexico
• German heritage through fatherembraced the Nazis
• Mother was an indigenous Mexican of Spanish
  descent
• Contracted polio at age 6 (made one of her legs
  thinner than the other so she always wore long
  skirts)

Violent Past

• Frida grew up during the Mexican Revolution
• Mother would feed and house soldiers and protect
  her and her sister from gunfire
• Enrolled in a Prep school that contained only 35
  girls.
• Joined a gang and fell in love with the leader
• Participated in boxing

Trauma

• 1925involved in a horrible accident on a bus
  that collided with a trolley car
• She suffered serious injuries in the accident,
  including a broken spinal column, a broken
  collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, eleven
  fractures in her right leg, a crushed and
  dislocated right foot, and a dislocated shoulder.
  An iron handrail impaled her abdomen.

Recuperating

• While recovering, Frida painted to pass the time
• Mostly self portraits
• "I paint myself because I am often alone and I am
  the subject I know best"
• Gave up studying medicine to become a painter
• Painted about pain and violence from her life
