Title: LARGE EDDY SIMULATION OF JET IN CROSS FLOW
1LARGE EDDY SIMULATION OF JET IN CROSS FLOW
Background
Large eddy simulation (LES) is used to solve
turbulent flows. LES treats turbulence as 3-D
unsteady flow and resolves large flow structures
while modelling the effect of smaller structures.
Objective
LES is being used to study the interaction of an
inclined jet in a cross flow. Effect of flow
interaction on scalar transport is being studied.
Coherent structures of jet in cross flow with
stream-wise vorticity contours (top) Laminar
Re2000, (bottom) Turbulent Re12000.
2Research Carried Out
Using an in-house developed code, the flow field
has been calculated and used to extract vorticity
and coherent structures to reveal the underlying
flow physics.
Instantaneous stream-wise vorticity at different
y-z planes.
Key Findings
Hair pin structures are the main feature of the
jet. In the case of turbulent flow there is a
strong interaction between the jet and main
stream. The average vorticity field shows a
counter rotating vortex pair.

rotating vortex pair at x5D.
