SCI Foundation Mission Statement To fund and
manage sustainable use conservation and
education programs worldwide

In 2008, the Safari Club International
Foundation, together with the Friedkin
Conservation Fund, built and completely outfitted
two solar-powered clinics in Tanzania.
Where needed, fresh water was supplied by digging
a well and providing a water tank.

The good works accomplished by SCIF are in line
with the eight United Nations Millennium
Development Goals. The MDG Awards Committee
congratulates Gene Rurka, Chairman of SCIFs
Humanitarian Services Committee, and his team of
dedicated staff and volunteers for all the work
they are doing in Tanzania and globally.

Sportsmen Against Hunger, the SCI Foundations
food-sharing program, provided 412,154 lbs. of
low-fat, hormone-free wild game meat to food
banks and relief organizations during the 2008
season alone. Thats enough for 1,648,616 meals!

Ben Bandy, age 27, had had two unsuccessful
kidney transplants and was on daily dialysis by
the time he participated in the Georgia Chapters
annual Daggerhorn Golden Rule Hunt in November
2008. Before he died later that year, all he
could talk about was how glad he was that hed
been able to make the hunt.

In July 2008, SCI Alamo San Antonio Chapter
member Mike Arnold helped sponsor the delivery of
a SafariCare bag to the Moskito Indians in the
remote jungles of Honduras. The mission team
said distributing the contents was like
Christmas in July! The kids were ecstatic to
receive clothes, crayons, toys and soccer balls.
They played soccer from dawn to dusk each day.

SCIs Badgerland Chapter visits the Sauk County
Fair in Wisconsin in July 2009. Parents always
marvel when their children are actually
encouraged to touch the animals.

69-year-old Ed Zirngible has inoperable bone
cancer. With little time left, he wished for one
more hunt with his two sons and grandson Logan.
In September 2008, his wish was granted by SCIs
Minnesota Chapter, who treated the family to a
waterfowl and deer hunt in North Dakota.

Since 2007, the SCI Foundation has been
partnering with the Sportsman Channel in
Hunt.Fish.Feed events held in 10 cities
including New Orleans, Washington DC, New York,
Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Santa Ana,
Denver and Orlando. At each event, sportsmen
donate venison to feed a home-cooked meal to the
less fortunate.

In 2008, SCIs Washington Metro Chapter partnered
with the St. Albans Africa Roundtable in a
SafariCare program. They sent Patsy Conner to
her childhood home of Antigua, where she went
shopping and delivered this Blue Bag filled with
necessities to The Salvation Armys Sunshine Home
for Girls.

On Armed Forces Day 2009, SCIs Chesapeake
Chapter held a sporting clays shoot at Marylands
Pintail Point Resort for this group of 12
disabled hunters and wounded veterans. The shoot
was so hugely successful that the chapter plans
on making it an annual event.

The 450 kids at Breton Downs Elementary School in
East Grand Rapids enjoy a 2-day visit from the
Michigan Chapters Sensory Safari trailer, which
has logged over 3,000 miles and thrilled more
than 15,000 visitors in just two years.

Dr. Glenn Geelhoed of SCIs Chesapeake Chapter
travels the world with 12 SafariCare bags and a
cadre of medical students, performing free
surgeries for the worlds bottom billion. Here
he is in Ethiopia in 2008.

In November 2008, SCI Golden Gate Chapter members
Mel and Sandy Toponce visited seven schools and
villages in Uganda, distributing everything from
school supplies to kitchen utensils and soccer
balls. The gratitude on peoples faces was one
of the highlights of our trip, said Mel.

Members of SCIs Louisiana Chapter rendezvous
with a refrigerated truck containing 2,240 pounds
of venison to offload 500 pounds to help feed the
hungry at the Ozanam Inn and at Sovereign Grace
Fellowship in Slidell, Louisiana.

In 2008, SCIs Minnesota Chapter--with assistance
from three other SCI chapters--treated11-year-old
Tennessee resident Chelsey Wampler, whos had
Type 1 diabetes since age 4, to a Minnesota
whitetail hunt where she successfully harvested
this beautiful buck.

In May 2009, SCIs Alabama Chapter hosted a
deep-sea fishing trip for three with Lady J
Charters out of Port St. Joe, Florida. They
caught about 300 pounds of fish!

In 2008, SCIs Washington Metro Chapter partnered
with the St. Albans Africa Roundtable in a
SafariCare program. Suzie Brewster was chosen to
take three SafariCare Blue Bags to Rwanda,
delivering a plethora of much-needed items to the
families living in the hunting preserve they
visited.

In May 2009, Members of SCIs Minnesota Chapter
held a food drive to benefit the Community Action
Council in Burnsville, Minnesota, which donates
to needy families in two of the states counties.

According to teacher Stacy Chapman, the Orange
County Chapters Mobile Sensory Safari continues
to be a highlight of her students curriculum.
Parents, teachers and students alike all oooh
and ahhh over the amazing creatures they find

Orange County Chapter members Mary Lynn and David
West visit South Africa in 2008, delivering a
SafariCare bag filled with dental and medical
supplies to the Makana Mobile Clinic near
Grahamstown. Anything and everything is needed,
so If it fits in the bag, buy it! is Mary
Lynns advice.

Knox, Indiana, was the location of the first
Turkey Tracks Hunt for the disabled. Taking
place in April 2009, it was developed by
22-year-old Eric Corey, the past recipient of
two SCI-sponsored hunts. Ten youths participated,
harvesting five birds. The hunt was so successful
that its going to be an annual event.

Tim and Bonnie Halstead of SCIs Minnesota
Chapter in South Africa in September 2008,
delivering a SafariCare bag to the Marken School.
The bag contained dental and hygiene items,
basic first aid and clinic supplies, and clothing
and toys for the children.

SCIs Central Missouri Chapter donated over
23,600 pounds of wild game meat in the 2008
season. In June 2009, their local Salvation Army
in Jefferson received a brand-new Hobart
commercial meat grinder from the SCI Foundation.

Troy Thomas, 17, has cerebral palsy and uses a
walker and wheelchair. In April 2009, SCIs
Redding Regional Chapter treated him to a
pheasant and a turkey hunt. As you can see, Troy
is quite capable and got17 birds, mostly all on
the first shot!

In 2008, Lyn Schmale-Tate took two SafariCare
Blue Bags filled with clothing (and cookies!)
to Mexico for the street children living in an
orphanage in the small village of Tepatitlan de
Morelos. The trip was part of the SCI
Washington Metro Chapters partnership with the
St. Albans Africa Roundtable in a SafariCare
program.

While laying up their fish processing vessel
Excellence for the season, Supreme Alaska
Seafoods set aside 5,800 pounds of the ships
stores and dry goods for donation to SCIs
Northwest Chapter, which worked with a local
church to distribute all the food to the needy
within 72 hours.

In keeping with its commitment to support wounded
vets, SCIs San Francisco Bay Area Chapter sent
36-year-old USMC Gunnery Sergeant Blaine Scott on
a fabulous spring bear hunt in British Columbia
in May 2009. He harvested this world-class
chocolate bear which measured 76.

Here is Kem Sawyer with a SafariCare Blue Bag
destined for Goma in the Democratic Republic of
the Congo. She delivered necessities to the
Human Watch Rights Office as well as to the
Center For Victims of Torture, which serves women
and children caught up in a decade-long civil war
which has claimed over 4 million lives. Kems
trip was part of the SCI Washington Metro
Chapters partnership with the St. Albans Africa
Roundtable.

The Houston Gulf Coast Chapters new Sensory
Safari attracts people of all ages, nationalities
and viewpoints who enjoy the trophies on display
and ask all manner of questions about specific
animals.

This is 23-year-old Tenner Murphy , diagnosed
with brain cancer at age 6. Though in a
wheelchair and suffering from occasional
seizures, he wished to hunt a whitetail deer.
SCIs Minnesota Chapter granted his wish in 2008.
Although he did not get a deer that day, he came
home happy with a great story to tell.

The SCI Chesapeake Chapters Dr. Glenn Geelhoed
and his medical students in Mindanao, the
Philippines, performing free surgeries for some
of the worlds bottom billion.

In June 2009, The Salvation Army in Tulsa
received this Hobart commercial meat grinder from
the SCI Foundation. Members of SCIs Oklahoma
Station Chapter and friends donated 200 pounds of
prime bison meat with which to initiate the new
machine.

In 2008, SCIs Northwest Chapter hosted Zach
Smith, whos had four brain surgeries and has no
use of his left arm, and his dad Norm on a deer
hunt where Zach proudly harvested this great buck.

SCI National member Don Mull and his wife Sherryl
deliver two SafariCare bags full of clothing and
shoes to Lucinge Village in Mozambique in 2008.
At first the villagers thought Don was trying to
sell them something, but when they discovered the
items were gifts, everyone eagerly jumped right
in.

Young John Paul Montgomery is a quadriplegic from
Alabama who wished to go elk hunting. In August
2008, SCIs Redding Regional Chapter sponsored
him on an elk hunt in Saskatchewan, Canada, where
he harvested this massive bull.

Attendance was robust at the Ocean Commotion
Sensory Safari hosted in November 2008 by SCIs
Louisiana Chapter at LSUs Pete Maravich Assembly
Center.

At The Salvation Armys Red Shield Lodge in
Jacksonville in June 2009, hundreds of hungry
people were treated to a feast of venison chili,
spaghetti and deer steaks, thanks to a 900-pound
meat donation from SCIs North Florida Chapter,
which also provided 500 in cash to the facility.

In April 2009, SCIs Minnesota Chapter organized
a wild turkey hunt for 32 disabled veterans.
Some were in wheelchairs, some limped when they
walked, and some had an arm missing. But all
felt that their personal batteries got a power
boost and they received a renewed zest for life
as they experienced the camaraderie of time
outdoors.

On their August 2008 trip to Tanzania, SCI
Lubbock Texas Chapter member Dr. Mark Scioli and
his son presented clothes, shoes, toys, school
supplies and medicine to the grateful villagers
of Nanjirinji.

In May 2009, SCIs Southeast Michigan Bowhunters
Chapter treated 8-year-old Noah Costa--who has
leukemia--and his family to a fishing trip on
Lake Erie. They returned to the dock that
evening with smiling faces and 30 walleye on
board.

17-year-old Seth Forck, pictured here with his
parents, sister, and the SCI Central Missouri
Chapters Bill Moore, had recently undergone his
second kidney transplant. Seth was the chapters
second SafariWish hunter of 2008. He harvested
this big-bodied elk, with an unusual palmate left
antler, at Missouris Whitetail Dreams Ranch.

The SCI Michigan Chapters Sensory Safari trailer
makes a visit to the Outdoor Writers of America
Conference in Grand Rapids in June 2009. Safari
Club International was one of the event sponsors.

In one week, SCI National member Mike Filion and
his 225 co-workers amassed more than 50 pairs of
athletic shoes, 100 pairs of socks, T-shirts,
fleece tops and soccer balls for his 2008
SafariCare mission to Okahandja, Namibia.
After sharing with a village of 17, he delivered
the rest, with some candy and other treats, to a
nearby AIDS orphanage.

Two outstanding individuals were chosen to
receive the 2009 Pathfinder Award. Each receives
an all-expense-paid 10-day safari. Greg will
hunt with Jan Oelofse Hunting Safaris in
Namibia Ed with Ekland Safaris in South Africa.
