Floridas Energy Crisis
  • Floridas demand will continue to grow at
    approximately one Gigawatt per year
  • Up to 75 of Floridas electricity generation is
fossil fuel based Costs are directly tied to
    the cost of fuel
  • Florida is 98 reliant on imported fuel sources
  • Ocean energy is the most promising sustainable
and renewable solution to this crisis

Additional Benefits of Ocean Energy
  • Minimal structure on the ocean surface
  • Base load generation potential both current and
thermal will yield continuous energy production
    in Gigawatts
  • Ocean energy potential matches demand in Florida
  • Fresh water is a by-product (desalination) with
    massive production potential
  • potable water
  • Irrigation
  • Clean Power No CO2, NOx, H2S, and other
    emissions.
  • Ocean energy has enormous potential it can
    supply the worlds energy

Floridas Ocean Energy Landscape
8
Potential Impact to Floridas Energy Future
  • Within 10 years
  • Cold water based A/C could reduce electricity
    consumption
  • Ocean energy could possibly begin to be provided
in commercially meaningful (more than small-scale
    experimental) amounts
  • Within 20 years
  • Ocean generated electricity over time could
substantially offset and perhaps help replace
    fossil generation
  • Enhance energy independence - replace imported
    hydrocarbons with Florida-available ocean current
    energy

9
Why Here? Why Us? Why the Ocean?
  • Floridas demand for energy usage continues to
grow resulting in a greater need for a long term
    sustainable, economically viable, and
    environmentally friendly solution.
  • South Florida has surpassed the capacity of its
    fresh water sources.
  • There is little land and water available to build
    conventional power plants or desalination
    facilities.
  • Ocean energy is a good source of renewable base
load capable energy source for electricity,
    hydrogen, and potable water.
  • Florida is surrounded by the ocean on three sides
and it has the longest coast line of all 48
contiguous states providing the best location in
the world to develop ocean current energy.
  • We are at the best location in the US to develop
ocean thermal power and potable water.
  • We have the necessary expertise in our
    partnership.
  • Florida needs ocean energy.

Vision of the Center of Excellence in Ocean
Energy Technology
  • The Center is a synergistic partnership among
    academic, industry, navy, and government
organizations that aims to foster the research,
    design, development, implementation, testing, and
    commercialization of cutting-edge ocean energy
technology which is cost competitive with
    existing fossil fuel-based power generation.
  • The center bridges the gap between concept and
commercial implementation by bringing together a
broad range of unique, enabling, and accessible
    expertise and physical assets.
