On Bargains
  • There are a lot of bargains in stores and markets
when we go shopping. I think these bargains are
good for consumers even if the prices has been
    reduced only a little.
  • There are many reasons why there are so many
bargains. Some shops mark down prices in order to
attract customers, some in order to defeat their
opponents in the market competition, and some to
sell their goods as quickly as possible. Though
they cut prices, shops can still make money from
the goods. But we, the customers, can spend less
money on the same commodities,so we welcome
    bargains.
  • Though there are a lot of bargains, we shouldn't
buy things if we dont need them. Otherwise we
are just wasting money. We should buy only what
we really need. If we can do that, bargains can
really be useful for us and we can really save
    money.
  • So I think bargains are good and we need them.
However, we should always be careful when we are
tempted by a bargain. It pays to be an
    intelligent shopper.

Media and Shopping
  • I think media such as TV, radio and newspapers
affect peoples shopping behavior greatly. The
most common way is through advertisements. We can
see or hear ads everywhere, in the newspapers, in
the street, on the buses or on the radio. We are
usually interested in these ads and often want to
buy the products advertised. This is just what
the manufacturers hope for. They spend a lot of
money to advertise their products through various
media. The ads can provide you with a lot of
information about the various items. So ads are
beneficial not only to manufacturers but also to
    shoppers.
  • In modern society, computers have also become a
new medium. People get information about the
products on the Internet. This is a faster,
easier and more exact way for both shopping and
advertising than any way. I think the Internet
will play an increasingly important role in
    peoples shopping.

  • (JJack BMr Black MMary)
  • J Welcome to At Your Service, the consumer
program that gives you advice when something goes
wrong with goods or services youve bought. If
you have a problem which youd like us to help
you with, heres the number to ring 01-2468041.
Thats 01-2468041. My name is Jack Mills, and
with me to answer your questions today is the
head of the Consumer Aid Association, Mary Smith.
  • J Now lets go straight to our first caller, Mr
Black from London. Good morning, Mr Black. How
    can I help you?
  • B Well, I was looking for a second-hand car and
I saw this advertisement in the local newspaper
and it was the car I wanted. It was 1,150 and it
was described as perfect. I went to see the car.
It looked very good, so I bought it
  • M Mr Black, could I interrupt?
  • B Yes, please.
  • M Did you pay the full asking price for the car?

Back
14
  • B Yes, I paid 1150 or it. It seemed all right
when I bought it. But a few days later, I had
some trouble starting it, and when it was
started, it didnt run very well. So I took it to
the local garage. They had a good look at it and
they said everything was wrong with it. It had
been damaged in an accident and the repairs
hadnt been very good. So it wasnt worth the
money Id paid for it. In fact, they said it was
only worth 400. Thats a lot less than Id paid
for it. So I went back to the man, but he didnt
really want to know and I dont know what to do
    now.
  • M Mr Black, the most important point here is
Was the seller a dealer or was this a private
sale? B I dont think he was a
    dealer.
  • M Well, unfortunately, with private sales the
buyers has very little protection under the law.
Did the man say that the car was perfect?
  • B Yes.
  • M When you bought the car, you bought it
understanding that it was faultless, that there
was nothing wrong with it at all?
  • B Yes, yeah.
  • M Im sorry to be a little pessimistic, Mr
Black. I think its probably worthwhile making a
claim under the Small Claims Procedure. It may
    be your best choice.
  • B I see. Thank you very much.
