4 5How can an Energy Auditor determine if a client
would benefit from upgrade lights and new
appliances?
- Do a Lighting Appliance assessment
6Lighting Appliance assessment
- Start by gathering information
- Which appliances do they have and where? (Any
refrigerators in the garage) - How old is the appliance?
- How much do they use the lights or appliances?
- Measure, when possible, how much energy it
actually uses -
-
-
7Lighting
- Lighting in the home is provided by using
electric lights, or by natural daylight through
windows and skylights. - For energy savings incandescents and halogens
should be replaced with CFLs LEDs (where
possible)
8Lighting Compact Fluorescent Lamps
- They use ¼ the energy and last 10 times as long
- They come in varied color renderings full
spectrum, bright white, golden - They give off 1/2 the heat of an incandescent or
halogen bulb
9Lighting LEDs
- Light Emitting Diodes (LED) They consume 3 to 5
watts for the same light levels as a 13 watt CFL
and 60 watt incandescent - Unfortunately, they cost 20 to 30/bulb
- They will continue to improve and come down in
cost.
10Overview of Appliances
- Common residential appliances
- Refrigerators/Freezers
- Ovens, Stoves
- Space Heaters
- Dishwashers
- Clothes washers/dryers
- TVs
- Computers
- Audio/Visual
-
-
-
11Taking an Inventory of Appliances
- So once youve determine how many appliances
where they are, whats next - Age
- Model number (too look up estimated consumption
- Talk with owner how much they use it
(dishwashers, etc.)
12Refrigerators/Freezers if it is pre-1990replace
it!
- Refrigerators built before 1990 may use 1200 to
1500 KWH/year (150 to 180/year) - Energy-Star refrigerators will only use 400 to
500 KWH (48 to 55/year) - Ask the homeowner, how much are they willing to
pay to cool that 6-pack of beer in the garage?
13Televisions solid, state, plasma LCD
- Solid state (tube) TVs use 75 to 300 watts on
and 5 watts off - Plasma TVs can use upt 1000 watts on and up to
100 watts off! - LCD TVs use 100 to 300 watts on and 5 to 10
watts off - Look for Energy-Star label beware of
phantom-loads
14Computers Laptop vs. Tower watch out for
Phantom-Loads
- Solid state (tube) TVs use 75 to 300 watts on
and 5 watts off - Plasma TVs can use upt 1000 watts on and up to
100 watts off! - LCD TVs use 100 to 300 watts on and 5 to 10
watts off - Look for Energy-Star label beware of
phantom-loads
15Stoves, Ovens natural gas orelectric? Plus,
microwaves
- Electric stoves will use 400 to 600 KWH/year
- Natural gas stoves will cost 1/3 (even with
current energy prices) - Microwaves use 900 to 1300 watts this is still
less than ½ what the electric stove will use
16Space Heaters the energyhog waiting inside
- Electric space heaters run at 1500 Watts
- If this runs 8 hours a day for 60 days over the
course of the winter will cost 100/winter - Assess how the house can be made more
efficient/comfortable to avoid using the unit
17When possible, measure dontestimate
- Doing short-term electrcity monitoring will show
the homeowner how much an appliance uses/costs - The homeowner can also afford to buy these (90
to 250) so they can track appliances around
their home

costs for Natural Gas Electricity is increasing
demand for energy auditors - Residential Energy Auditors have been around
since the 1970s but it has been a small industry
nationwide in Colorado - Governor Ritters New Energy Economy rising
costs for Natural Gas Electricity is increasing
demand - With buildings consuming more than 1/3 of all
energy in the U.S. each year, they are a
significant source of Global Warming emissions
22Career Opportunities
- Governor Ritters New Energy Economy rising
costs for Natural Gas Electricity is increasing
demand for energy auditors - As a part of this, Xcel Energy Aquila Power
must prove significant Energy-Efficiency
Renewable energy enhancements between now and
2020 20 of power must come from renewables or
nega watts - Energy Auditors are first on the scene to assess
energy problems and prescribe solutions - House-as-a-System knowledge is needed to identify
the problems and even to optimize the
installation of renewables
23Career Opportunities
- Becoming an Energy Auditor opening a door to
House as a System performance Becoming an
Energy Auditor opening a door to House as a
System performance - Knowing how the pieces of a house work together
are needed by - Insulation HVAC Contractors
- Builders Architects modular, traditional
remodel - Building officials
- Solar contractors
- Home Inspectors
- Energy Auditing/Rating firms
- Utility companies
- Home building owners
24Career Opportunities
- Local Building Departments
- Regional codes emphasize much higher levels of
energy-efficiency - Many jurisdictions have adopted standards that
are 30 to 90 higher than Code - Inspectors must have and Understanding of
House-as-a-system
25Career Opportunities
- Solar Installers
- Quality solar PV (Photovoltaic) installers offer
Energy/Electric Audits for their customers - Solar water heating for space heating- need help
on determining the heating load as well as ways
to reduce the load so the solar meets a larger
