What is FFA

• FFA was created in 1928 as the Future Farmers of
  America. In 1988 the name was changed to the
  National FFA Organization.
• The past 83 years, FFA and agriculture encompass
• Production Farming
• Agribusiness
• Forestry
• Biotechnology
• Marketing
• and Food Processing
• FFA is structured on three levels Local, State,
  and National.

• There are 8 primary types of SAE programs
• Entrepreneurship

• Agriscience research
• Agricultural Service Learning
• Exploratory
• Improvement
• Supplemental
• Directed school Laboratory

What is FFA

• A Program of Activities (POA) serves as a road
  map for planning activities and accomplishing
  goals at the local level. The POA is divided into
  three divisions
• Student Development
• Chapter Development
• Community Development

NFA

• The emblem had the outline of a boll of cotton
  instead of an ear of corn other wise, it was the
  same as the FFA emblem
• There were five Texans that were national NFA
  presidents.

• 1917 Smith-Hughes Act establishes agriculture
  classes
• 1928/29 Leslie Applegate first FFA President
• 1929 National Blue and Corn Gold were adopted as
  the official colors of the FFA

• 1950 Harry S. Truman (U.S. President) Public Law
  740 granted National FFA a Federal Charter
• 1952 National Future Farmer magazine published

• 1959 1st National FFA Center dedicated in
  Alexandria, VA
• 1965 NFA merged with FFA
• NFA (New Farmers) African American
• ? 1969 FFA opens membership to girls and the
  National FFA Alumni Association was established

• 1973 FFA Official Dress standards created
• 1974 Fred McClure from TX is the 1st
  African-American elected to a national FFA office
• 1982 Jan Eberly, California, becomes 1st female
  national FFA president

• 1989 National Future Farmer changed to FFA New
  Horizons
• 1994 Corey Flournoy, Illinois, is the first
  African American to be elected National FFA
  President he is also the first urban student
  leader.

• 1998 First member from Puerto Rico elected as a
  National officer.
• 1998 Pl 81-740 was revised and replaced with PL
  105-2251998 The National FFA Center was opened in
  Indianapolis, IN.
• It houses the National FFA Organization,
  including its Alumni and the National FFA
  Foundation.

• 1998 The Ag. Education National Headquarters
  opened in Alexandria, VA.
• It houses the National Council for Ag. Education
  along with Larry Case, National FFA Advisor, and
  Dr. Steve Brown, National FFA Executive
  Secretary.
• 1999 National FFA Convention moved from Kansas
  City, Mo. to Louisville, Ky.

• 2000 Discovery Degree available for middle school
  FFA members.
• 2003 Javier Moreno, Puerto Rico, is elected
  national president he becomes the first member
  with a native language other than English to be
  elected national FFA president.
