Did you know the word Tattoo originated in the
17th century, when drums or trumpets sounded to
call troops back to the quarters in the evening?
- Tattoos are displays of military music, marching,
rhythmic gymnastics, and dance which have taken
place in Scotland since 1950

Pipes and Drums of the 2nd Battalion, Royal
Canadian Regiment
- The 2nd Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment Pipes
and Drums were formed in 1970. - The tradition of Pipes and Drums ensembles began
during the time when Canada was still part of the
British Empire. - Unlike other military bands, these pipers and
drummers are also regular duty soldiers who
volunteer to be in this ensemble as a hobby. - Since 1983 members have incorporated Highland
dancing into their performance.

6Instruments of the Tattoo
The Bagpipe
- The bagpipe is a wind instrument with a number of
pipes and a bag. - The melody pipe, or chanter, has finger holes
that are played to produce the tune. - The piper puffs air into a blowpipe that fills
the bag made of animal skin. - The sound that a bagpipe produces is continuous
as the bag is constantly filled by the piper and
rhythmically squeezed to keep air moving through
the instrument. - The colors of the bagpipes decoration often
represent the Scottish clan (family), military
regiment, or other organization to which the
piper belongs.

The Drums
- The two main drums of the Pipes and Drums
ensembles in the Virginia International Tattoo
are the Snare Drum and the Bass Drum - Both Drums can be found in a variety of ensembles
such as a 3 Area Support Group Gagetown Pipes and
Drums or Colonial Williamsburg Fife and Drums
- The Snare Drum
- The Snare Drum is a small percussion instrument
with pieces of curled wire called snares that
give it the signature rattling sound. - The Scottish Snare used in Pipes and Drums
ensembles is the only of its kind in the world
incorporating snares on both the bottom and top
of the instrument. - Until the 19th century, the Snare Drum was only
used in military bands.
- The Bass Drum
- The Bass Drum is the largest drum in a military
band - The Bass Drum is made of a big wooden cylinder
shell with two heads, or drum skins held on with
hoops placed over the ends.

The Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums
- The Colonial Williamsburg Fifes and Drums have
entertained visitors to the Historic Area since
1958. - Boys and girls begin their education in military
music at age 10 and practice weekly for the next
eight years. - The Fifes and Drums appear in more than 700
performances each year.

- The National Defense Band of the Czech Republic
was founded in the 1950. - The first commander and bandmaster was Jindrich
Pravecek. - The Band has over 35 recordings includingTHE
CZECH CLASSICS, a selection of P.I.Tchaikovsky
and the FESTIVE CONCERTO IN RUDOLFINUM which
includes Antonín Dvoráks Slavonic Dancers

The Horns
- Horns have been used in the militaries of many
countries to call troops to order through formal
calls. - Many standard brass instruments are found in
Military bands such as the Trumpet, Euphonium,
Trombone, and French Horn
- Spotlight on the Bugle
- The Bugle was developed from a hunting horn used
in Germany in the 18th century - Similar to a trumpet, the Bugle is a copper or
brass instrument that coils once or twice and
opens in a wide cone.

The Band of His Majesty the Kings Guard
- His Majesty the Kings Guard holds the primary
responsibility to guard Norways royal family and
to perform in national ceremonies. - A new military band is recruited each year, with
the best available musicians arriving from
Norways huge number of band schools. - They have performed many times at the Edinburgh

Elsas Procession to the Cathedral is the
opening music to Act II, Scene 4. The piece
became known as Elsas Procession to the
Cathedral only after its use as a concert band
piece.

Arthurian Medieval Legends. - First production was in Weimar, Germany on August
