Title: Brazing

1
Brazing
Brazing is a permanent method of joining steel
together. It needs three things HEAT, a FILLER
MATERIAL and FLUX. The materials to be joined
are placed together and FLUX is applied to the
join. This helps the filler to flow and stick
better to the metal. The materials are then
HEATED until they are bright red. The FILLER
MATERIAL is then placed on the join and the high
temperature causes it to melt. When cooled this
filler material is what causes the materials to
join.
2
Pop Riveting
Pop Riveting is used to join thin sheet material
together, such as aluminium. A pop rivet is
placed into a hole drilled through both pieces of
material to be joined. The rivet gun is
then pushed over the head of the rivet and
squeezed. The rivet then swells in size, filling
the hole, until the rivet stem breaks off.

Metal Casting
Metal Casting is a process used to make intricate
metal shapes from steel, or in a school workshop
aluminium. A two part mould is made from sand
which contains the shape to be cast. As the sand
is damp it sticks together well leaving a hollow
that is the same shape as the one we want to
make. Molten metal is then poured into the
mould. When it is cool the sand is broken away
and we are left with our shape. This shape then
needs to have the excess metal cleaned off.
