Title: Mentoring

1
Mentoring
  • A Path to Spiritual Growth

2
What is Mentoring?
  • Mentoring is
  • Imparting knowledge and experience to another
    person
  • Advising and providing guidance
  • A long term process
  • A mutually beneficial partnership

3
  • The term mentor dates back to ancient Greek
times. When Ulysses embarked on his long journey
in the classic Greek tale, The Odyssey, he chose
his wise and trusted friend Mentor, to guide and
    teach his son.

4
A quote from Dan Wilt on Fathers Day
  • We could celebrate the roles of mothers today.
We could celebrate the role of women of
influence, mentors of young men and womens
    lives
  • There is a unique role that God gives to Fathers
and to males to become mentors within young men
and womens lives. Fathers (Mentors) impart
    identity.

5
There are many examples of mentoring roles in the
Bible
  • Moses and Joshua (The Lord Saves)
  • Joshua fights the Amalekites under Moses (Exodus
    178-9)
  • 8 The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites
    at Rephidim.
  • 9 Moses said to Joshua, "Choose some of our men
    and go out to fight
  • the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top
of the hill with the staff
  • of God in my hands."

6
On Mount Sinai with Moses (Exodus 2412-13)
  • 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the
mountain and stay here, and I will give you the
tablets of stone, with the law and commands I
    have written for their instruction."
  • 13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and
Moses went up on the mountain of God.

7
On Mount Sinai with Moses (Exodus 3216-19)
  • 16 The tablets were the work of God the writing
was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.
  • 17 When Joshua heard the noise of the people
shouting, he said to Moses, "There is the sound
    of war in the camp."
  • 18 Moses replied        "It is not the sound of
victory,        it is not the sound of defeat
it is the sound of singing that I hear."
  • 19 When Moses approached the camp and saw the
calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he
threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them
to pieces at the foot of the mountain.

Mordecai and Esther (Esther 25-7)
  • 5 Now there was in the citadel of Susa a Jew of
the tribe of Benjamin, named Mordecai son of
Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish,
  • 6 who had been carried into exile from Jerusalem
by Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, among those
taken captive with Jehoiachin king of Judah.
  • 7 Mordecai had a cousin named Hadassah, whom he
had brought up because she had neither father nor
mother. This girl, who was also known as Esther,
was lovely in form and features, and Mordecai had
taken her as his own daughter when her father and
    mother died.

9
Hamans Plot to destroy the Jews (Esther 31-11)
  • 1 After these events, King Xerxes honored Haman
son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, elevating him and
giving him a seat of honor higher than that of
    all the other nobles.
  • 2 All the royal officials at the king's gate
knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king
had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai
would not kneel down or pay him honor.
  • 3 Then the royal officials at the king's gate
asked Mordecai, "Why do you disobey the king's
    command?"
  • 4 Day after day they spoke to him but he refused
to comply. Therefore they told Haman about it to
see whether Mordecai's behavior would be
tolerated, for he had told them he was a Jew.
  • 5 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not kneel
down or pay him honor, he was enraged.
  • 6 Yet having learned who Mordecai's people were,
he scorned the idea of killing only Mordecai.
Instead Haman looked for a way to destroy all
Mordecai's people, the Jews, throughout the whole
    kingdom of Xerxes.

10
  • 7 In the twelfth year of King Xerxes, in the
first month, the month of Nisan, they cast the
pur (that is, the lot) in the presence of Haman
to select a day and month. And the lot fell on
the twelfth month, the month of Adar.
  • 8 Then Haman said to King Xerxes, "There is a
certain people dispersed and scattered among the
peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom
whose customs are different from those of all
other people and who do not obey the king's laws
it is not in the king's best interest to tolerate
    them.
  • 9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be issued
to destroy them, and I will put ten thousand
talents of silver into the royal treasury for the
men who carry out this business."
  • 10 So the king took his signet ring from his
finger and gave it to Haman son of Hammedatha,
the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.
  • 11 "Keep the money," the king said to Haman, "and
do with the people as you please."

11
Mordecais Advice to Esther (Esther 45-14)
  • 5 Then Esther summoned Hathach, one of the king's
eunuchs assigned to attend her, and ordered him
to find out what was troubling Mordecai and why.
  • 6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the open
square of the city in front of the king's gate.
  • 7 Mordecai told him everything that had happened
to him, including the exact amount of money Haman
had promised to pay into the royal treasury for
    the destruction of the Jews.
  • 8 He also gave him a copy of the text of the
edict for their annihilation, which had been
published in Susa, to show to Esther and explain
it to her, and he told him to urge her to go into
the kings presence to beg for mercy and plead
    with him for her people.
  • .

12
  • 9 Hathach went back and reported to Esther what
    Mordecai had said.
  • 10 Then she instructed him to say to Mordecai,
  • 11 "All the king's officials and the people of
the royal provinces know that for any man or
woman who approaches the king in the inner court
without being summoned the king has but one law
that he be put to death. The only exception to
this is for the king to extend the gold scepter
to him and spare his life. But thirty days have
passed since I was called to go to the king."
  • 12 When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai,
  • 13 he sent back this answer "Do not think that
because you are in the king's house you alone of
    all the Jews will escape.
  • 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief
and deliverance for the Jews will arise from
another place, but you and your father's family
will perish. And who knows but that you have come
to royal position for such a time as this?"

13
Esther Petitions the King (Esther 71-10)
  • 1 So the king and Haman went to dine with Queen
    Esther,
  • 2 And as they were drinking wine on that second
day, the king again asked, "Queen Esther, what is
your petition? It will be given you. What is your
request? Even up to half the kingdom, it will be
    granted."
  • 3 Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found
favor with you, O king, and if it pleases your
majesty, grant me my lifethis is my petition.
And spare my peoplethis is my request.
  • 4 For I and my people have been sold for
destruction and slaughter and annihilation. If we
had merely been sold as male and female slaves, I
would have kept quiet, because no such distress
    would justify disturbing the king."
  • 5 King Xerxes asked Queen Esther, "Who is he?
Where is the man who has dared to do such a
    thing?"

14
  • 6 Esther said, "The adversary and enemy is this
vile Haman." Then Haman was terrified before the
    king and queen.
  • 7 The king got up in a rage, left his wine and
went out into the palace garden. But Haman,
realizing that the king had already decided his
fate, stayed behind to beg Queen Esther for his
    life.
  • 8 Just as the king returned from the palace
garden to the banquet hall, Haman was falling on
the couch where Esther was reclining. The king
exclaimed, "Will he even molest the queen while
she is with me in the house?" As soon as the word
left the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.
  • 9 Then Harbona, one of the eunuchs attending the
king, said, "A gallows seventy-five feet high
stands by Haman's house. He had it made for
Mordecai, who spoke up to help the king." The
king said, "Hang him on it!"
  • 10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows he had
prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's fury
    subsided.

15
The Call of Elisha (1 Kings 1919-21)
  • 19 So Elijah went from there and found Elisha son
of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve yoke of
oxen, and he himself was driving the twelfth
pair. Elijah went up to him and threw his cloak
    around him.
  • 20 Elisha then left his oxen and ran after
Elijah. "Let me kiss my father and mother
good-by," he said, "and then I will come with
you." "Go back," Elijah replied. "What have I
    done to you?"
  • 21 So Elisha left him and went back. He took his
yoke of oxen and slaughtered them. He burned the
plowing equipment to cook the meat and gave it to
the people, and they ate. Then he set out to
follow Elijah and became his attendant.

16
Elijah tests Elisha (2 Kings 21-6)
  • 1 When the LORD was about to take Elijah up to
heaven in a whirlwind, Elijah and Elisha were on
    their way from Gilgal.
  • 2 Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here the LORD has
sent me to Bethel." But Elisha said, "As surely
as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not
leave you." So they went down to Bethel.
  • 3 The company of the prophets at Bethel came out
to Elisha and asked, "Do you know that the LORD
is going to take your master from you today?"
"Yes, I know," Elisha replied, "but do not
    speak of it."
  •

17
  • 4 Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here, Elisha
the LORD has sent me to Jericho." And he replied,
"As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I
will not leave you." So they went to Jericho.
  • 5 The company of the prophets at Jericho went up
to Elisha and asked him, "Do you know that the
LORD is going to take your master from you
today?" "Yes, I know," he replied, "but do not
    speak of it."
  • 6 Then Elijah said to him, "Stay here the LORD
has sent me to the Jordan." And he replied, "As
surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will
not leave you." So the two of them walked on.

18
Elishas Request (2 Kings 2 9-10)
  • 9 When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha,
"Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken
from you?" "Let me inherit a double portion of
    your spirit," Elisha replied.
  • 10 "You have asked a difficult thing," Elijah
said, "yet if you see me when I am taken from
you, it will be yoursotherwise not.

19
Elijah taken to Heaven in a fiery chariot (2
Kings 2 11-15)
  • 11 As they were walking along and talking
together, suddenly a chariot of fire and horses
of fire appeared and separated the two of them,
and Elijah went up to heaven in a whirlwind.
  • 12 Elisha saw this and cried out, "My father! My
father! The chariots and horsemen of Israel!" And
Elisha saw him no more. Then he took hold of his
own clothes and tore them apart.
  • 13 He picked up the cloak that had fallen from
Elijah and went back and stood on the bank of the
    Jordan.
  • 14 Then he took the cloak that had fallen from
him and struck the water with it. "Where now is
the LORD, the God of Elijah?" he asked. When he
struck the water, it divided to the right and to
the left, and he crossed over.
  • 15 The company of the prophets from Jericho, who
were watching, said, "The spirit of Elijah is
    resting on Elisha."

20
The Mount of Transfiguration (Matthew 171-9)
  • 1 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James
and John the brother of James, and led them up a
    high mountain by themselves.
  • 2 There he was transfigured before them. His face
shone like the sun, and his clothes became as
    white as the light.
  • 3 Just then there appeared before them Moses and
    Elijah, talking with Jesus.
  • 4 Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us
to be here. If you wish, I will put up three
sheltersone for you, one for Moses and one for
    Elijah."

21
  • 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud
enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said,
"This is my Son, whom I love with him I am well
    pleased. Listen to him!"
  • 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell
    facedown to the ground, terrified.
  • 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he
    said. "Don't be afraid."
  • 8 When they looked up, they saw no one except
    Jesus.
  • 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus
instructed them, "Don't tell anyone what you have
seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from
    the dead."

22
The Raising of a Dead Girl (Mark 535-43)
  • 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some men came
from the house of Jairus, the synagogue ruler.
"Your daughter is dead," they said. "Why bother
    the teacher any more?"
  • 36 Ignoring what they said, Jesus told the
synagogue ruler, "Don't be afraid just believe."
  • 37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter,
James and John the brother of James.
  • 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue
ruler, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying
    and wailing loudly. .

23
  • 39 He went in and said to them, "Why all this
commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but
    asleep."
  • 40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all
out, he took the child's father and mother and
the disciples who were with him, and went in
    where the child was.
  • 41 He took her by the hand and said to her,
"Talitha koum!" (which means, "Little girl, I say
    to you, get up!" ).
  • 42 Immediately the girl stood up and walked
around (she was twelve years old). At this they
    were completely astonished.
  • 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know
about this, and told them to give her something
    to eat.

Examples from my own life
  • Effective mentors are people of vision they
see the diamond in the rough, recognize potential
that others do not see, and believe that the
potential can be achieved. A great mentor helps
protégés believe that they can achieve above and
beyond anything that they have ever dreamed
possible and demonstrate the patience and
persistence required to see that potential
    realized.
