1Advanced Molecular Biology
For Graduate Students
Instructor Yi Zhang Rm 6137- College of Life
Sciences (027) 68756207 yizhang_at_whu.edu.cn)
2Course Goals
1. Consolidate the basic knowledge of molecular
biology that is associated with the central
dogma. (20 effort) 2. Fully understand 10
different molecular biology methods. (Chapter 4,
5 and 24) (20 effort) 3. Fully understand 2-3
key experiments in chapter 6 to 23 that lead to
the major conclusion of gene expression
regulation, as well as genome replication and
recombination. (40 effort) 4. Learn to
understand by self-studying and to let your
audience understand by presentation. (20 effort)
3Course resource
Text book Molecular Biology by Robert F. Weaver
and published by McGraw Hill Course web
service www.rna.whu.edu/course.html
4Teaching arrangements
- Every student select a chapter from the book
teach that chapter using self-prepared ppt
slides. You learn to teach - One student will have 45 minutes to teach, and 25
minutes to answer questions. - Every audience has to grade each presentation at
the end of each class.
5How to prepare a presentation
- Read the chapter thoroughly.
- Completely understand the chapter.
- Select the most interesting contents to be
presented, primarily those including experimental
evidence. - Prepare your ppt file. (1) Use high resolution
original figures for presentation (2) Arrange
the contents logically (3) List the key points
and avoid too many non-organized sentences on a
slide. - Rehearsal at least once to streamline your
presentation.
6How to present
- Speak loudly and confidently.
- Present the concepts accurately.
- Interact with your audience to make sure that
they are following your presentation.
7For the audience
- Read the chapter briefly before the class and
bring your book to the class - Actively think to follow the speakers
presentation. - Write down the questions and ask the speaker
during discussion. - No questions during presentation to avoid
interruption. - Actively participate during discussion.
- Fairly grade the presentation.
8Grade the presentation
- If the presentation has been well prepared 15-30
points - If the presentation has been clearly given and if
the important points have been accurately
underlined. 25-50 points - If questions have been correctly answered. 10-20
points
9Course Grading
- Your presence and participation (grading and
discussion) 20 - Your presentation 50
- The final exam 30
