Planning and Designing in Woodworking
  • Chapter I

2
Design Factors
  • Functional
  • Material
  • Methods
  • Appearance

3
Furniture Styles
  • Style refers to a distinctive manner of designing
which is typical of a specific person, place,
    time, or group
  • Traditional
  • Early 20th Century Influences
  • Contemporary

4
Traditional furniture styles
  • Represent different periods of history in France,
    England, and the United States
  • Inspired by the rulers who commissioned for
    designs which the found appealing.
  • Ex. Napoleon inspired the French Empire Style

5
Early 20th Century
  • An effort to return to a more honest and simple
design in reaction to the cluttered Victorian
    styles of the late 1800s
  • form follows function
  • Ex. Prairie homes were based on the idea that a
structure, its surroundings, and its furnishings
should be parts of a whole

6
Contemporary Furniture
  • Very latest designs since about 1950
  • Beautiful grained hardwoods, especially walnut,
    are often used
  • Plastics and lighter weight metals are sometimes
    used

7
Sketching
  • First, with the pencil held several inches from
the point, make light block-in lines
  • Second, Grip the pencil near the pint and press
down firmly. Follow along the block-in lines with
a series of strokes formed by a wrist movement
  • Finish with details

8
Presentation Drawings
  • Isometric
  • The easiest and most commonly used
  • First block in cubes and rectangles that hold the
    shapes
  • Then locate finished outlines from the edges and
    surfaces of the block-in form

9
Presentation Drawings
  • Oblique
  • Make a profile or front view
  • Then secure the third dimension by drawing back
    at a angle
  • Make the lines drawn at an angle only about
one-half their actual length to produce a more
    realistic appearance

10
Presentation Drawings
  • Multiview Projection
  • Orthographic views
  • Can be used for presentation drawings
  • Valuable for checking the proportion, balance,
and other visual aspects of the design

11
Working Drawings
  • Provides complete shape and size description of
the product and its various parts
  • Includes assembled views of the product, complete
with all size and location dimensions
  • Large pieces with an irregular contour are
carefully drawn to scale on a grid of squares is
superimposed on the contour lines so that
    accurate patterns can be developed
  • Type and size of fasteners, proportion wood
joints for the greatest strength, and determine
the exact size of various parts

12
Plan of Procedure
  • A carefully prepared list of the steps you
propose to follow in the construction of your
    project
  • Steps should be listed in outline form

13
Bill of Materials
  • Includes number of pieces, exact size, kind of
    wood, name of the part
  • Dimensions are listed in this order
    thickness x width x length
  • A stock cutting list can be developed from the
    bill of materials
