Religious Disagreement
  • England had been a Protestant country since 1534
    - but many wanted to return to the Roman Catholic
    belief and rituals.
  • Puritans - wanted to purify the church by
    getting rid of all Roman Catholic influences.
  • Separatists - left the church to worship by
    themselves.
  • Pilgrims - travelers with a religious goal.

The Journey
  • Pilgrims had little money - they joined with
    other English separatists and gained a charter to
    set up a colony in VA.
  • John Carver arranged financial backing and found
    a ship, the Mayflower.
  • The crossing was stormy and the ship was blown
    off course - landed in Cape Cod.

The Mayflower Compact
  • Since they were outside the area of their charter
    they had to establish some kind of law and
    discipline (the Mayflower Compact).
  • John Carver was elected governor.
