Title: Dust and Chlorophyll over the Mediterranean
1Dust and Chlorophyll over the Mediterranean
- GEOSS Web Services (GWS) Interoperability
Demostration - Presented at the workshop
- The User and the GEOSS Architecture
- July 22, 2007, Barcelona, Spain
2Ocean Fertilization by Atmospheric Dust
Evidence of Chlorophyll Enhancement by Dust
Oceanic Biomass by Phytoplankton
N. Pacific Ocean
Bishop et al.(2002), Science
E. Mediterranean
- Phytoplankton produce most of the oceanic biomass
through photosynthesis - Photosynthesis by chlorophyll has been shown to
increase with atmospheric dust fertilization
However, precipitation, the wind and many other
factors also influence the production of
chlorophyll A scientific challenge is to quantify
the chlorophyll-dust relationship
3Interoperability through GEOSS
GEOSS Facilitates publishing, finding and
processing the data resources, to support
decision makers

4How is Dust Influencing Chlorophyll over the
Eastern Med?
Chlorophyll surge occurs after dust events but
dust events are also associated with high winds
Oceanic chlorophyll is also measurable through
satellite and in situ sensors
Sahara Dust is abundant over the Mediterranean as
shown in historical records, surface observations
and satellite sensors
- Science Question
- What are the relative roles of
- Iron-phosphorus fertilization by dust?
- Enhanced mixing in high winds?

9Summary
- System of Systems architecture is suitable for
integrating data - Standard data access is a key interoperability
protocol - Heterogeneous data can be non-intrusively
standardized by mediators - Service-based architecture delivers tailored
products to diverse uses - However,
- GEOSS Catalog facilities are not yet operational
- The data access standardization is very spotty ad
fragile - More data need to be federated to benefit from
the network effect - Interoperability demonstrations are key steps
toward the establishment of configurable, robust
networks
