7SPX QUAD FUEL BURNER FIRING HIGH BTU GAS FUEL
GAS BURNER SECTION The gas burner section of
the SPX Series Burner incorporates design
features that allow field replacement of the gas
orifices in the gas distribution ring. This
feature allows field adjustment and compensation
for varying gas BTU values, flows and supply
pressures without the necessity of re-sizing and
drilling gas orifices. In addition, change over
to various gas fuel types natural gas to
propane, butane, etc. is extremely easy. Uniform
gas distribution is also achieved in the burner
gas ring thus ensuring balanced flame
distribution at all firing rates. Excellent gas
and combustion air mixing is obtained due to the
location of the gas orifices in relationship to
the burner combustion air discharge full mixing
occurs even at extremely low firing rates.
8SPX QUAD FUEL BURNER FIRING LOW BTU GAS FUEL
LOW BTU / WASTE GAS BURNER SECTION The Low BTU
/ Waste gas burner section of the SPX Series
Burner incorporates design features that allow
field replacement of the gas orifices in the gas
distribution ring. This feature allows field
adjustment and compensation for varying gas BTU
values, flows and supply pressures without the
necessity of re-sizing and drilling gas orifices.
In addition, change over to various gas fuel
types sewer gas, coke oven gas, landfill gas,
waste gas, etc. is extremely easy. Uniform gas
distribution is also achieved in the burner gas
ring thus ensuring balanced flame distribution at
all firing rates. Excellent gas and combustion
air mixing is obtained due to the location of the
gas orifices in relationship to the burner
combustion air discharge full mixing occurs even
at extremely low firing rates.
9SPX QUAD FUEL BURNER FIRING LIQUID FUEL
LIQUID FUEL BURNER SECTION The liquid fuel
burner section of the SPX Series Burner includes
components that deliver the liquid fuel and
atomizing medium to the atomizing nozzle. The
head section of the liquid fuel gun assembly is
where liquid fuel and atomizing medium enter, via
inlet pipes, and is distributed to supply tubes
that are connected to the nozzle adapter. The
head section also includes liquid fuel and
atomizing medium pressure gauges and an "O" ring
for sealing the liquid fuel atomizing gun
assembly into the burner jacket tube. All liquid
fuel and atomizing medium supply hoses are
stainless steel braided with stainless steel
double shut-off-type quick disconnects supplied
on the liquid fuel connection and stainless steel
straight-thru-type quick disconnects supplied on
the atomizing medium connection.
10SUN LIQUID FUEL ATOMIZING NOZZLE
The SUN patented liquid fuel atomizing nozzle is
an air driven oscillator designed specifically
for atomizing liquid fuels. The atomizing air
passes through a convergent / divergent orifice,
within the nozzle, where it is accelerated beyond
the speed of sound and upon exiting the nozzle
creates a sonic shockwave. After leaving the
nozzle, the sonic shockwave is reflected back by
a resonator chamber to complement and amplify the
primary sonic shockwave this results in an
intensified stationary sonic-energy field between
the nozzle exit and the resonator chamber. Any
liquid capable of being delivered to this
high-frequency sonic field is vigorously
shattered into very fine droplets down to 5
microns in size. Atomizing air, by-passing the
resonator chamber, carries the droplets
downstream in an extremely low forward velocity
spray. In addition, the atomizing air by-passing
the resonator chamber prevents liquid
accumulation on the resonator chamber body and
its support legs thus enabling the nozzle to be
self-cleaning. By varying the atomizing air
delivery pressure and volume to the nozzle, the
sonic shockwave frequency can be altered, thus
changing the degree of atomization to the liquid.
This feature enables the same nozzle to be
utilized for atomizing any grade and / or type of
liquid fuel. The degree of atomization obtained
is not dependent upon the amount of pressure drop
or velocity through the nozzle liquid orifices,
thus allowing large liquid orifices or annular
type slots to be incorporated into the nozzle.
This feature allows highly viscous and / or
grossly contaminated liquids to be utilized
without clogging the nozzle and permits the use
of low liquid delivery pressures, which reduces,
wear and greatly extends nozzle life. The
greatest advantage of the nozzle is its ability
to provide a consistent quality of atomization
over wide viscosity ranges and flow
rates. Sonically atomized droplets highly resist
reaglomeration, thus reducing the possibility of
droplets collecting on combustion chamber walls,
floors, combustion tiles or burner surfaces. The
absence of any moving parts in the nozzle
virtually eliminates maintenance and the
resonator chamber may be removed from the nozzle
for replacement if it has been damaged. All
nozzles are made from high-alloy stainless
steels, Stellite, Stellite coated stainless
steels or from other materials depending on the
application.
11ADDITIONAL WASTE LIQUID BURNER SECTION
An additional Waste Liquid Burner Section can be
installed in lieu of the Low BTU / Waste Gas
Section on all SPX Series Burners. This feature
enables the firing of an additional waste liquid
for those applications where this capability is
desirable. The operation of this feature is the
same as outlined in the Liquid Fuel Sections
described previously.
12SPX QUAD FUEL BURNER FIRING SOLID FUEL
SOLID FUEL BURNER SECTION The solid fuel
section of the SPX Series Burner incorporates
design features that allow different types of
solid fuels to be burned with high combustion
efficiency. Excellent solid fuel and combustion
air mixing is achieved, even at very low firing
rates, due to the unique design of the solid fuel
burner section. The solid fuel burner sections
design provides for even distribution of the
solid fuel particles within the primary air
conveying stream and incorporates a unique
adjustable flame shaping device that allows the
solid fuel flame to be tailored to the combustion
chamber.
13DUAL SOLID FUEL BURNER SECTION A dual solid fuel
burner section is available as an option on all
models and sizes of the SPX Series Burner. This
solid fuel burner section is designed for
utilizing two (2) solid fuels such as
Anthracite and Bituminous Coals, Bituminous Coal
and Petroleum Coke, Waste Solids and Sawdust,
etc. firing independently or simultaneously.
14 COMBUSTION AIR DELIVERY The SPX Series
Burner incorporates a combustion air fan that is
mounted externally of the burner housing. This
feature is utilized on multiple burner systems or
where various combustion air discharge pressures
are required for the application. A
characterizing type linear combustion airflow
control valve provides close combustion airflow
control into the burner housing. Combustion air
enters the burner housing through fixed air
distributing vanes insuring even distribution of
the combustion air into the burner air tube. An
adjustable air sleeve, manual or automatic
operation, allows trimming of the combustion air
flow into the burner air tube for varying furnace
conditions furnace pressure, draft, excess air,
etc. An adjustable, high-alloy steel,
combustion air diffuser provides accurate
combustion air direction into the atomized liquid
fuel stream thus enhancing fuel and combustion
air mixing. Fully adjustable flame shaping
vanes, manual or automatic operation, provide
burner flame shaping capabilities in the field
without trial and error modifying or replacing
diffusers, discharge housing, etc. In addition,
this feature allows the flame to be tailored to
the combustion chamber design, thus providing
maximum heat transfer without flame impingement
on the furnace floor, walls, etc. Due to these
unique design features, the SPX Series Burner
can sustain stable, clean and complete combustion
of fuels at extremely low or very high excess air
levels, provide burner firing rate-turn-down
ratios exceeding 201 and provide for proper
combustion air / fuel mixing at all firing rates.
15 PILOT SYSTEM A gas / electric pilot system
comes standard with the SPX Series Burner. The
pilot systems design insures trouble free main
flame light-off and stable operation even at high
excess combustion airflow rates. The gas /
electric pilot system is basically composed of an
ignition electrode with insulators which
generates an arc between it and an adjacent
ground, a pilot gas / air mixer for proportioning
gas / air, a tube through which the gas / air
mixture is directed towards the nozzle and a
pilot nozzle which directs the gas / air mixture
to the point of the electric arc and assists in
retaining the pilot flame. A charge from a
high-voltage, solid-state ignition transformer is
routed to the ignition electrode causing an
intense arc to ground. The electrode is then
immersed in a concentration of gas / air mixture
as the automatic pilot solenoid valve opens
allowing gas to flow to the pilot gas / air mixer
then to the pilot nozzle. The intense arc
ignites the gas / air mixture and approximately
five (5) seconds after the UV flame detector
senses the flame, the electrical discharge from
the ignition transformer terminates the pilot
then stands ready to ignite the main flame. An
optional liquid fuel / electric pilot system is
available for use on the SPX Series Burner.
This pilot system is capable of lighting 2, 4,
5 and 6 fuel oils, waste oils and waste
chemical fuels reliably and requires minimal
maintenance. The electrode / ignition
transformer system utilized is identical to the
units used on the gas / electric pilot systems.
16 COMBUSTION TILE The SPX Series Burner
utilizes a unique combustion tile. Its design
enables the SPX Series Burner to achieve
extremely stable combustion while at very low
firing rates. The combustion tile promotes the
recirculation of the hot combustion gases back
into the new fuel / air mixture exiting the
burner ensuring rapid ignition and full burning
at all firing rates. The combustion tile is
constructed of high-density / high-alumina
refractory with stainless steel needles added to
insure strength and long life. The tile is cast
as one piece into a stainless steel combination
holder and mounting bracket. The SPX Series
Burner is then bolted to this tile holder /
mounting bracket thus insuring accurate burner to
tile alignment and proper sealing. PERFOR
MANCE Due to its unique design features, the
SPX Series Burner can sustain stable, clean and
complete combustion of conventional and
unconventional (Waste) fuels at extremely low or
very high excess combustion air levels, provide
burner firing rate-turndown-ratios exceeding
201, provide for proper combustion air / fuel
mixing at all firing rates, and provide excellent
flame stability at all firing rates within the
burners designed operating range. The SPX Series
Burner may be applied to high-negative draft or
high-positive draft applications and have been
applied to systems that operate at 250-PSI
furnace pressure.
