Strategies
  • To enable School Council members and parents to
    deepen their understanding regarding what EQAO is
    and how children can be better prepared through
    home support.

Goal

What is EQAO?
  • EQAO is Ontarios province-wide assessment
    program. The Primary assessment takes place at
    the end of grade 3, and the Junior assessment at
    the end of grade 6. In grade 9, students take a
    test in mathematics during the semester they are
    in a mathematics course. The OSSLT is
    administered in March every year, for students in
    grade 10.

What does EQAO test?
  • EQAO tests are based on The Ontario Curriculum,
    which details the knowledge and skills that
    students are expected to learn in each subject at
    each grade level.
  • The tests are standards-based, with the
    standards being the curriculum expectations

What can parents do to support reading and
writing development?
  • Be a role-model for reading and writing behaviour
  • Talk with your child oral language is critical
  • Make reading and writing enjoyable through a
    variety of texts and activities
  • Encourage your child to read every day, both for
    pleasure and for information

  • Read aloud to your child as frequently as
    possible
  • Have your child read to you
  • Talk with your child about what he/she is reading
  • Encourage your child to write for many different
    purposes
  • Have a variety of reading materials available in
    your home

What can parents do to support mathematical
literacy development?
  • Be positive about mathematics
  • Make mathematics part of your childs day
  • Use mathematics in real-life contexts such as
    cooking, when travelling, shopping, etc.
  • Encourage your child to problem solve
  • Encourage your child to communicate how a math
    problem was solved

  • Encourage your child to look for multiple
    solutions to a problem
  • Encourage your child to use manipulatives when
    solving problems
  • Children need to use multiple representations
    pictures, numbers, words, technology
  • Practise estimating and checking the
    reasonableness of an answer try playing The
    Price is Right
