1MODERNIZATION PROJECTS OF ANPP IC SYSTEMS, 22
LICENSING APPROACH
Leonti Chaloyan Deputy Chief Engineer
Armenian NPP
Regional Workshop Portoroz,
Slovenia 14 -18 April 2008
2GENERAL INFORMATION
ANPP is located in the western part of Ararat
valley 30 km west of Yerevan close to Metsamor
town
3BACKGROUND
- The ANPP consists of two WWER-440 power units.
- Unit 1 was commissioned in 1976 and Unit 2 in
1980, respectively. - Units 1 and 2 were shutdown in February and
March, correspondingly of 1989. - In 1993 the Government of Armenia made a decision
on restart of ANPP Unit 2. - Following the completion of repair and safety
upgrading activities Unit 2 was connected into
power grid in 1995. - Unit 1 remains in long-term shutdown.
- The design lifetime of Unit 2 expires in 2016.

6MAIN GOALS
- Elimination of non-compliances with current
safety standards regarding first of all safety
related issues, and/or reduction of the impact of
these non-compliances on safety by means of
corrective actions - Enhancement of reliability of safety important
systems, equipment and elements - Reduction of common cause failure probability
- Implementation of IAEA recommendations related to
WWER NPPs safety improvement.
7Improvement of IC and Automatic Control Systems.
- Replacement of non-seismic relays in emergency
process protections logics with those having
seismic resistance. - Replacement of non-seismic sensors and secondary
instruments involved in protections and
interlocks logics with those having seismic
resistance. - Installation of main steam isolation valves on
main steam lines. - Installation of primary to secondary circuit leak
detection system.
8Improvement of IC and Automatic Control Systems.
- Commissioning of Safety Parameters Display
System. - Replacement of IV500 computer with an up-to-date
computer. - Implementation of automatic primary and secondary
water chemistry monitoring system. - Improvement of plant dose control system.
9Improvement of IC and Automatic Control Systems.
- Improvement of Iney source range system for
automatic neutron flux monitoring. - Installation of reactor vessel level detection
system. - Improvement of SG level automatic control system.
- Reconstruction of automatic reactor power
controller.
10IQ PROGRAMM
- The qualification programme has been developed
under UK DTI project in 2006. - Document Evaluation of environment conditions in
safety system rooms with new design basis
accidents has been developed in 2006 (in the
framework of completion of integrated activities
related to extension of design basis accidents
spectra to include Dcon 100mm breaks).

Project A1.01/00B
Scope of the Project Upgrading of the existing
SRMS to overcome obsolescence of components, to
improve reliability and maintainability, to
increase the man-machine interface. Main System
Implementation Six new flux fission Chambers
with higher sensitivity, six new Measurement
Instrumentation chambers and related Power Supply
Systems, a Reactivity Processing Unit,
Instrumentation (analog and digital). Safety
Justification Improvement of SRMS reliability
through higher sensitivity of new detectors.
Enhance of correctness of sensor signals, Enhance
of ANPP signal Interfacing with the availability
of a Reactivity Processing Unit and digital
technology. Enhance SPMS maintainability with the
replacement of a decade-old products with a
state-of-the-art technology.
