COMPETENCY MEASUREMENT

• ACGME count cases (process measure)
• Flaws
• Different residents require different numbers of
  cases to gain competency
• Some learn quicker than others
• RRC encourages equal s of cases among residents
• Does not measure if resident actually gains
  competency

COMPETENCY MEASUREMENT

• Outcomes measure
• Education Council developed core surgical skills
  set
• Includes cases at all PGY levels
• Skills are transferable to other procedures
• ABOto is collecting data to determine validity
  and usefulness of data
• Did resident gain competency?
• If so, during which PGY?
• Can be used by PD to identify residents needing
  additional attention earlier in training

DETERMINING COMPETENCY

• PD is final arbiter for a resident
• Suggest working with other faculty members
• Quarterly or semi-annual meeting
• Get faculty input
• Once PD determines competency has been achieved,
  enter in ABOto website
• At time of determination of competency or,
• At end of year evaluation
• Once competency achieved, dont need to deal with
  that procedure again
• Forms for local documentation
• EC developed form will be on ABOto website

TO WHOM DOES THIS APPLY?

• Not retrospective
• Would be difficult to reconstruct when a resident
  obtained competency
• Going forward evaluation
• Applies to only PGY1 PGY2 residents at this time
• PGY class will be added each year until all five
  PGY groups are covered
