The Equipment Rental Industry
Background Equipment rental organizations have
large investments in assets that are often
distributed over wide areas. Objectives Tracking
each assets location is critical to ensure
against theft Monitoring each assets Engine
Run-Hours is essential in scheduling timely
Services Monitoring each assets usage levels can
also protect against abuse Problems Present
methods to track and manage these machines are
typically manual, and hence error-prone and
expensive. Present methods cannot meet regulatory
requirements (SarbOx, California AQMD) Net

Generator Rentals - Challenges
- Generator rentals are charged by the capacity of
each machine, and by how long each machine is
rented. In addition, some rentals also charge a
premium for high usage levels. - It is difficult for a rental company to know how
much a machine has been used when it is in the
field. Some customers lie about their usage, and
some even disable the Engine Hour-Meters. - Many service companies are responsible for
performing oil changes and even re-fueling the
generators. - Again, it is often difficult to know when to
schedule the onsite calls for service or for
re-fueling. Relying upon the rental customers
input is not always a good option. - Rental units are often deployed to remote
locations, where access is difficult. - False dispatches can be expensive and
time-consuming.

Generator Rentals - Challenges
Many generator companies specialize in offering
certain types of generators. They may elect to
only carry certain types of machines (for
example, some companies only carry large
generators capable of provide 500KV or more).
However, generator companies NEVER say no to a
customer. If a customer requests a type of
machine that the rental company does not carry in
their inventory, they will simply acquire it from
another rental company, and then rent it to the
customer. These deals are called re-rents. The
second rental company - which supplies the
machine to the re-renting company - must be
confident that they will be paid for the use of
their machine. If there is enough trust between
the two organizations, the equipment owners may
even allow their machines to be stored onsite at
the other companys facility, knowing that any
machine may be re-rented to a customer at any
time. This type of arrangement can work well for
all parties, but it requires the equipment owner
to trust the renting company. That trust can be
broken if a machine is rented to a customer, but
the equipment owner is not informed and does not
receive any revenues for his equipment. The
In-Touch solution allows the owner of a machine
to allow it to be re-rented without risk. If
the machine should leave the storage yard - or
if its engine should run for any extended period
of time - the fleet manager will be immediately
notified. This eliminates any risks and makes the
re-rent business model very safe and attractive.

Heavy Equipment Rentals - Challenges
- Heavy Equipment rentals involve many of the same
challenges as the Generator rentals. - As with generators, the heavy equipment rental
company should track each machines location and
engine run-hours to protect against theft, and to
ensure proper Service. However, re-fueling
agreements and re-rents are not common in this
market. - Heavy Equipment rentals are typically charged
upon how long each customer retains each machine. - However, customers can call a machine off-rent
by notifying the rental company that they will
not use a machine during a specific period of
time (usually a few days or more), based upon
issues such as inclement weather work stoppage
due to permit delays or other events beyond
their control. - The rental company must take the customer at
his word that the machine wont be used during
that period of time. The rental company will not
bill the customer during that off-rent period. - Customers can notify the rental company at any
time that they no longer need the machine, and
that they wish to conclude the rental. - The machine will immediately come off-rent,
meaning the customer will no longer be billed for
it. - Some customers will deliberately call a machine
off-rent on a Friday morning, knowing that the
rental company cannot send a truck to pick it up
until the following week. The customer may then
use the machine over the weekend at no charge,
until the rental company retrieves it the next
week.

Heavy Equipment Rentals - Challenges
Heavy Equipment rental companies often try to
achieve three forms of revenue for each
machine. Equipment Rental Equipment Sales (the
rental machines are sold as used
equipment) Equipment Services The rental
companies realize that a good maintenance program
will allow them to collect a premium price for
each used machine they sell. In other words,
good equipment maintenance is the key to this
type of business program. The In-Touch solution
helps the heavy equipment rental companies to
enforce proper Service intervals, and even to
protect themselves against certain forms of
equipment abuse. Bottom Line In-Touch can help
them meet their business objectives.
