VoIP over CUWiN mesh
  • Date of Submission May 14th, 2006

2
VoIP
  • Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is the
routing of voice conversations over the Internet
    or any other IP-based network.

3
CUWiN
  • Champaign-Urbana Community Wireless Network
(CUWiN) has been developing a free, open source,
turnkey wireless networking solution that can
    provides extremely high-speed, low-cost
networking for every community and constituency.

Interesting Fact
  • PC registers to the Antenna.
  • Antenna checks the MAC address of the PC and
    assigns it an IP address.
  • While routing, antenna doesnt check the MAC
    addresses.
  • We were able to exploit this. We used a PC to get
an IP address and then configured ABACUS with
    this IP address.
  • We had to do this as ABACUS doesnt support DHCP.

7
Goal
  • To test how well VoIP services operate over the
    CUWiN network under different environment.
Configure several possible scenarios under which
operate VoIP services and applications over the
CUWiN mesh. Then capture and analyse the data we
    got.

8
Testing
  • 1.Set up CUWiN mesh network.
  • 2. Connect the Abacus 5000 into our network.
  • 3. Pretend the 2 port of Abacus 5000 as 2 nodes
    in our network.

9
Configuration of Abacus 5000
  • Abacus originates and terminates calls.

10
Configuration of Abacus 5000
11
Testing
  • 4. Set up all the parameters of Abacus 5000.
  • 5. Check the status of each channel.
  • 6. Initiate 10 calls with RTP flows between the 2
    ports.

12
Testing
  • 7. Capture the information about SIP and RTP by
    ethereal in the call time.
  • 8. Test the quality of the calls.
  • 9. End the calls and create the quality report by
    Abacus 5000.

13
Testing
  • 10. Initiate 20, 50 calls and repeat the steps
from step 3 to step 8.
  • 11. Add traffic between the nodes which we
created calls on and repeat the steps from step3
    to step 9.
  • 12. Analyses all the data we get about the calls.

16
Common Failures
  • Connection Disconnect
  • Unexpected Disconnection
  • Both of them indicated the network is overloaded.

Conclusion
  • With the increase of the calls and the traffic in
the network, the amount of dropped calls increase
and the quality of the calls decrease.
  • We have quantified the results.

20
Future Tasks
  • We want to test the effect of HSLS on SIP.
  • We will reduce the power of the antennas and
force a route change and observe the effect.
