Advising in Engineering

• All First-Year students in Engineering will have
• A first-year faculty advisor
• At least one student peer advisor
• Access to the advising services provided by the
  Engineering Advising Office

First-Year Faculty Advisors

• Are assigned during the summer prior to
  matriculation
• Will be the students primary contact for
  academic advising information
• Will be the students instructor for the ENGRG
  1050 (Advising Seminar) course during the Fall
  semester

Peer Advisors

• Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in the College
  of Engineering who volunteer to help new students
• Assigned to the ENGRG 1050 (Advising Seminar)
  groups, which meet weekly
• An excellent source of academic and social
  information, specifically from a students
  perspective

Engineering Advising Office

• Staff advisors and administrators who support the
  students and faculty advisors
• A resource for a variety of academic and personal
  issues and questions

What Engineering Advising Does

• Staff provides academic advising support for
  students until they declare a major (affiliate)
  in the sophomore year
• Assists students with academic endeavors
• Academic progress
• Internal transfer
• Study abroad
• Pre-med major
• Early intervention
• Review academic petitions
• Review transfer credit requests
• Referral to appropriate service/area
• Coordinates ENGRG 1050 seminar and Peer Advisors

What courses will I take this Fall?

• In the first term, most Engineering students will
  take
• Engineering Math
• Engineering Science (Chemistry or Physics)
• Introduction to Engineering (ENGRI) or
  Introduction to Computing
• A First-Year Writing Seminar (FWS)
• ENGRG 1050 (Advising Seminar)
• Physical Education (PE)
• Optional Academic Excellence Workshops (AEW)

More on Fall courses

• Engineering Advising will identify most of your
  Fall courses in July, based on your responses to
  the mailing you received in May
• The Engineering Registrar will then enroll you in
  these courses during July and early August
• You will complete and adjust your schedule during
  Orientation, after meeting with your faculty
  advisor
• In your response to the May mailing, be sure to
  indicate if you anticipate any advanced placement
  (AP, GCE, IB) or transfer credit from another
  university

FWS and PE

• Students will self-enroll in the First-Year
  Writing Seminars (FWS) and Physical Education
  (PE) during Orientation in August
• The FWS program uses an on-line balloting system
  that students will complete during Orientation,
  before classes begin
• Students will enroll in PE classes by visiting
  the main PE Office in Teagle Hall during
  Orientation
• Complete details will be presented at the
  Academic Briefing during Orientation Saturday

Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs)

• One-credit, small-group cooperative-learning
  sessions that complement core engineering courses
  in mathematics, chemistry and computer science
• Weekly, 2-hour workshops are led by trained peer
  facilitators
• In a cooperative environment, students work
  together on concepts and problem sets to enhance
  understanding of the class material

Take Your Swim Test!

• All students must pass the swim test in order to
  graduate from Cornell
• We recommend that you take it during Orientation
  if at all possible
• Please visit www.swimtest.cornell.edu for
  detailed information

Advanced Placement Credit

• Students with appropriate scores on selected CEEB
  AP Exams can receive credit towards the BS degree
  in Engineering (Please consult the flyer
  Advanced Placement and Transfer Credit for
  First-Year Engineering Students for details)
• If you have taken CEEB AP Exams, please be sure
  to ask the College Board to send your results to
  Cornell University as soon as possible
• Be sure to indicate the exams you have taken and
  the scores (if known) when you send us your
  response to the May mailing

International Credentials

• Students who have taken the GCE A-Level or IB
  Higher Level Exams may also be eligible for
  advanced placement credit towards the BS degree
  in Engineering
• To receive credit, please present your official
  results (or a certified copy) to Engineering
  Advising, 167 Olin Hall, during Orientation
• Be sure to indicate the exams you have taken and
  the scores (if known) when you send us your
  response to the May mailing

Transfer Credit

• Credit for college-level courses taken at another
  institution may be awarded if
• The course was taught on a college campus by
  college faculty
• The course was not used to meet high school
  diploma requirements
• The course is deemed to be equivalent to a course
  used to satisfy a degree requirement in the
  College of Engineering at Cornell

Transfer Credit

• To apply for transfer credit students must
• Submit a course description or syllabus for each
  class
• Provide a letter from a high school official
  indicating that the course was taught on a
  college campus by college faculty and was not
  used to fulfill high school diploma requirements
• Provide an official transcript from the offering
  institution

Online Add/Drop

• Many course changes can be made using Cornells
  online add/drop system during Orientation
• Peer Advisors will review the add/drop process
  during Orientation

During Orientation you will

• Take the scheduled Cornell Advanced Standing
  Exams (CASE), if desired
• Take the optional Engineering Math Advanced
  Standing Exam, if desired
• Meet with your faculty advisor and peer advisor(s)

During Orientation you will

• Attend major information and special interest
  sessions (pre-med, study abroad, etc.)
• Submit your First-Year Writing Seminar ballot
• Enroll in a Physical Education class at Teagle
  Hall
• Take the Cornell University swim test

Academic Integrity

• The Cornell Code of Academic Integrity states
• Absolute integrity is expected of every Cornell
  student in all academic undertakingsAcademic
  integrity is expected not only in formal
  coursework situations, but in all University
  relationships and interactions connected to the
  educational process.
• But what this means to a First-Year student may
  vary greatly, depending on the students high
  school experience and/or cultural background.
