Title: Lab Exercise 29A Blood Typing
1Lab Exercise 29ABlood Typing
2Step 1 Drawing Blood OUCH!Be VERY clean! Use
the alcohol to clean your finger and use a brand
new lancet everytime! Dispose of lancet in
Sharps container when finished.
3Step 2 Squeeze out a nice drop of blood
4Heres what the blood typing card looks like
5Step 3 The Procedure
- Place a drop of blood on the right side of each
circle group. - Place a drop of antibodies on the left side of
each circle group. - Anti-A goes in the 1st circle
- Anti-B goes in the 2nd circle
- Anti-Rh goes in the 3rd circle
6The Antibodies
Blue Anti-A Yellow Anti-B White Anti-Rh
7Step 4 Mixing the antibodies with the blood
- Mix the antibodies with the blood and look for
the agglutination reaction.
8Recall
- Each antibody will attack cells containing their
SPECIFIC surface antigen. - Anti-A will ONLY attack cells containing surface
antigen A - Anti-B will ONLY attack cells containing surface
antigen B - Anti-Rh will ONLY attack cells containing the Rh
surface antigen - If the antibody attacks the cell it causes
agglutination or clumping of the cells.
9- In this test, we are adding specific antibodies
to each drop of blood. - If we see agglutination with a particular
antibody, we can conclude that the blood cells DO
contain that surface antigen. - Lets take a look at my results
10My results Can you tell whats my blood type????
11Did Anti-A cause agglutination?
NO! Conclusion My blood has NO surface antigen
A
12Did Anti-B cause agglutination?
NO! Conclusion My blood has NO surface antigen
B
13Did Anti-Rh cause agglutination?
YES! Conclusion My blood HAS surface antigen Rh
14Results No surface antigen ANo surface
antigen BYes I have surface antigen Rh
I am blood type O
15Tips and Tricks
- If you are a poor bleeder massage the blood
into the tip of your finger before drawing blood. - When drawing blood push the lancet device into
