Title: Advanced Intro to Quantum Mechanics

1
Advanced Intro to Quantum Mechanics
  • Special Topic

2
Purpose
  • Still very simplified, but covers more in-depth
    quantum mechanics
  • Read the Intro to Particle Accelerators and Black
    Holes presentation first

3
What is Antimatter?
  • Antimatter is the opposite of matter
  • For each particle there is an antiparticle
  • There is essentially an antiuniverse
  • Should you meet your antiself the universe and
    antiuniverse would collapse

4
Quarks
  • 6 types
  • Up, down, top, bottom, charm, and strange
  • Combinations make up other particles

5
Hadrons
  • Particles made of quarks and/or gluons
  • Come in 2 flavors baryons and mesons
  • Baryons are a type of fermion
  • Fermions obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle
  • Made of 3 quarks
  • Mesons are a type of boson
  • Bosons do not obey the Pauli Exclusion
  • Made of 2 quarks

6
Baryons
7
Mesons
8
What is the LHC Looking for?
  • The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is
colliding protons together try to find a single
    predicted particle
  • They want to find the Higgs Boson

9
Why do we care about the Higgs Boson?
  • The Higgs Boson is predicted to be the particle
    that creates mass
  • We know what mass is, but not what causes it
  • If all matter is at its most basic energy, then
    what makes mass?

10
Higgs Boson
  • Think of the Higgs Boson like someone others are
    drawn to
  • Wherever they move others clump or group around
    them
  • Where people group you have mass and density

11
Why this bothers us
  • There are 4 basic parts to the model of reality
  • Electromagnetism (How particles and waves
    interact)
  • Strong Forces (Hold the nucleus together)
  • Weak Forces (Control radioactivity and fusion)
  • Mass (We have no understanding of this)

12
LHC
  • The LHC brings us one step closer to having a
    full understanding of our world
  • It will either prove there is a Higgs Boson, show
we need a more powerful collider, or find
    something entirely new
