UNDERSTANDING FRENCH
The Listening Paper only tests vocabulary that
you have covered during the Standard Grade
course. You are NOT allowed a dictionary or a
vocabulary booklet so your best chance of success
is LEARNING VOCABULARY IN ADVANCE on all of the
key topics. There are some simple techniques you
can learn to help you get good marks in
listening
  • Read scenario and questions in advance
  • Listen out for key points of information
  • Remain calm and never give up
  • Leave no blanks

4
1. Read scenario and questions in advance
  • Key advice
  • The scenario at the start of the paper sets the
scene. This gives clues to the likely content of
    some of the questions.
  • Read each question carefully and try to predict
    some possible vocabulary / answers.
  • Look at number of marks for each question to help
you see how much information you need to
    understand.

2. Listen out for key points of information
  • Key advice
  • You will hear the French read out THREE times.
  • Focus on listening for the answer to the question
ONLY. You do not need to understand all the
    other information.
  • Each time you hear the text, try to gradually
build up the amount you understand until you have
enough to answer the question fully.

6
  • Remain calm never give up
  • Key advice
  • Whatever happens DONT PANIC if you dont
    understand at first!!!
  • Focus on what you are trying to find out. Listen
carefully again and try to hear familiar words
the more vocabulary you know, the better you will
    be at this!
  • Listen the full 3 times. If, by then, you still
dont know, make an educated guess.

7
4. Leave no blanks
  • Key advice
  • You wont get any marks if you leave a blank, so
you might as well guess when you dont know the
answer! You never know you could be right!!
Lots of the answers are predictable.
  • Be careful not to put TOO much information in (ie
more than the number of marks) or this will cause
the EXTRANEOUS rule to be applied.
