2- Primary Threats
- Human Disturbance
- Environmental Contaminants
- Habitat Loss
- Monitoring Objectives
- Determine the status and trend of nest
- occupancy for osprey at LARO
- Determine the status and trend of
- productivity ( of young per successful
- nest) for osprey at LARO
3Survey Frequency and Timing 2 nest site visits
required per season First Visit - To determine
occupancy early incubation period
early-May Second Visit - To determine number of
young fledged mid-July Target Population All
established nests identified and mapped within
1500 m of the shoreline of Lake Roosevelt
National Recreation Area, where access is not
restricted by landowners or limited by steep
terrain. Survey Methods Surveys will be
conducted on foot and by boat. Binoculars and
spotting scopes will be used to reduce
disturbance of breeding pairs.

10Project Osprey Nestwatch
- Collaborative effort between the UCBN I M
program and Lake Roosevelt NRA - Based on volunteer efforts of park staff and
citizen bird watchers - This project is web-based meaning that all of the
information participants need will be found on a
website
11Click to zoom in to Map Tile view
12Click nest picture or nest ID label to enter a
nest observation record
13Nest Form displays existing observation records
for this nest. Click on Date to view details
14Click Add Observation link to enter a new nest
observation record
15Entering a new nest observation record -- select
species (typically will be Osprey) -- name,
email, phone will auto-populate (based on login
ID email) -- enter date observation method
(by boat, by vehicle, or by foot) -- enter
observation data ( adults, nestlings, age of
nestlings, behavior, etc.) -- upload a nest
photo, if applicable
16Note about New Nests User can also enter a New
Nest (this will be an infrequent need). If New
Nest is added, the nest will not appear on the
Map Tiles but will appear at bottom of the Nest
List box, allowing the user to enter observations
for the New Nest.
17Future Plans 2010
- Project NestWatch website
- Formalize participation of LARO SCA crew
- Adopt-a-Nest Program LARO River Mile
- Data collection of nest site characteristics for
2009 occupied nests -
nest height (m), tree height (m), tree dbh (cm),
distance to water (m), species of tree, and
relationship of nest tree heights and diameters
to the heights and diameters of surrounding
trees.
