Iowa State University (1)
  • Iowa Agricultural College and Model Farm (now
Iowa State University) was officially established
on March 22, 1858, by the legislature of the
State of Iowa.  Story County was selected as a
site on June 21, 1859, and the original farm of
648 acres was purchased for a cost of 5,379.
  • The Farm House, the first building on the Iowa
State campus, was completed in 1861, and in 1862,
the Iowa legislature voted to accept the
provision of the Morrill Act, which was awarded
to the agricultural college in 1864.
  • Iowa Agricultural College (Iowa State College of
Agricultural and Mechanic Arts as of 1898), as a
land grant institution, focused on the ideals
that higher education should be accessible to all
and that the university should teach liberal and
practical subjects. These ideals are integral to
    the land-grant university.

Iowa State University (2)
  • The first official class entered at Ames in 1869,
and the first class (24 men and 2 women)
graduated in 1872.  Iowa State was and is a
    leader in agriculture, engineering, extension,
home economics, and created the nation's first
state veterinary medicine school in 1879.
  • In 1959, the college was officially renamed Iowa
State University of Science and Technology.  The
focus on technology has led directly to many
research patents and inventions including the
first binary computer (the ABC), Maytag blue
cheese, the round hay baler, and many more.
  • Beginning with a small number of students and Old
Main, Iowa State University now has approximately
27,000 students and over 100 buildings with world
    class programs in agriculture, technology,
    science, and art.

Bioeconomy Institute (1)
  • The Bioeconomy Institute (BEI) is an outgrowth of
    the Bioeconomy Initiative -- a campus-wide
effort, launched in 2002, to investigate the use
    of biorenewable resources as sustainable
    feedstocks for producing chemicals, fuels,
    materials, and energy.
  • BEI has over 140 faculty affiliated members who
contribute to the Bioeconomy Initiative with over
37 million in cumulative sponsored research
funding from industry and federal agencies
ranging from the Department of Agriculture to the
    National Science Foundation.

23
Bioeconomy Institute (2)
  • Those involved in the Bioeconomy Initiative
realize that in the process of moving beyond our
current dependence on petroleum, the bioeconomy
is nothing less than a revolution in the way
society will supply itself with essential sources
    of carbon and energy
  • . The bioeconomy will require tight linkages
    between plant breeding, soil fertility,
    sustainable crop production, biomass
    transportation and logistics, rural communities,
    bioprocessing, distribution, and marketing
    services.

24
Bioeconomy Institute (3)
  • Iowa State's faculty has been engaged for many
years in both fundamental and applied research
projects related to biorenewable resources and
    biobased products.
  • What distinguishes ISU is its early recognition
    that single objective, single investigator
approaches to problems in this field have stymied
    progress toward commercialization of biobased
    technologies..

http//www.biorenew.iastate.edu/who-we-are.html
25
Bioeconomy Institute (4)
  • The BEI was established to provide cohesion among
the diverse efforts in biorenewable resources on
campus and to encourage collaboration among
departments, colleges, and research units. To
date, the BEI has engaged 15 departments in five
    colleges and 13 research centers.

Biorenewables Research Laboratory (1)
  • The Iowa Board of Regents approved the 32
million budget and conceptual design for a new
biorenewables research laboratory at Iowa State
University during its meeting Thursday in Ames.
  • It is the final approval ISU needed before it
could proceed with construction on the project.
If everything stays on schedule, ISU expects to
bid the project in September 2008 and have the
building open for operation by January 2010.
  • The laboratory is the first piece of a new
biorenewables complex planned for the west side
of campus. When the money becomes available, ISU
plans to add on two wings to the laboratory to
house its Department of Agricultural and
    Biosystems Engineering. snip

42
Biorenewables Research Laboratory (2)
  • The price tag for the entire project, including
the parking ramp and the 32 million laboratory,
    is estimated around 120.5 million.
  • The new complex is expected to help ISU attract
both researchers and contracts to campus in the
    field of biorenewables.
  • "Biorenewables research is, of course, the
    future of Iowa State,
  • Executive Vice President and Provost Betsy
Hoffman told the regents during Thursday's
    meeting.
  • Later in the day, the regents approved one of the
several new institutes that will be housed in the
complex. The Center for Carbon Capturing Crops
will continue ongoing research at the university
to develop crops capable of sequestering
    atmospheric carbon.
  • "We really want to be the center of the future of
the solution to the world's climate change
    problem," Hoffman said.

four years to aid development.By JASON
CLAYWORTH REGISTER STAFF WRITERAmes, Ia. -
It's official Iowa will pump 100 million into
boosting its renewable fuel research and
production. Gov. Chet Culver signed legislation
Wednesday that will allocate the money to promote
such things as wind power and ethanol-like
improvements over the next four years. Culver
called the bill historic legislation, telling a
crowd of about 50 people at Iowa State University
"Our 21st century Iowa expedition starts now."
Said Culver, "This will begin the process of
making our entire state a laboratory so that we
remain a cutting edge of all forms of renewable
    energy."

Web 2.0 Participatory Web
  • Web 2.0, refers to a perceived second generation
of Web-based communities and hosted services
    such as blogging, social-networking sites,
wikis and folksonomies which aim to
    facilitate collaboration and sharing
    between users.
  • The term became popular following the first
    O'Reilly Media Web 2.0 conference in 2004.
Although the term suggests a new version of the
World Wide Web, it does not refer to an update to
any technical specifications, but to changes in
the ways software developers and end-users use
    the Web

Sustainable Resources Science and Information
Sources
  • Biofuels From An Information Perspective /
  • Kathleen Sands
  • Interest in biofuels is sweeping the nation due
to a growing demand to relieve our nation's
dependence on oil and to ease strains on the
environment that are produced by using fossil
fuels. In order for this industry to grow and
become an integral part of our transportation and
energy systems, people must be able to inform
themselves of the issues, ideas and research
    activities associated with biofuels.

Sustainable Resources Science and Information
Sources
  • This makes it difficult for researchers and the
general public to navigate easily through the
resources that are currently available. In
addition, there are a broad group of stakeholders
who have a wide range of information needs on
    biofuels. Chemists, biologists, scientists,
    farmers, private companies, engineers,
    environmentalists, economists, government
officials and the general public all want
    information on the topic.
  • To best serve all of these interested parties, a
coordinated information system would create and
provide central, organized, and easily accessible
information resources. For many years, the
National Agricultural Library (NAL) has served as
a central hub of current agricultural
information, providing for a diverse group of
patrons. Some of our latest focuses have been on
rural issues, alternative farming systems and
technology transfer. This talk will present NAL's
plans for improving the availability of
information on biofuels as this important
    industry continues to grow.

Nature Network (1)
  • Nature Network is the online meeting place for
you and fellow scientists to gather, talk and
find out about the latest scientific news and
events. Science is an international endeavor and
deserves a global stage for discussion.
  • Scientists can also benefit from interactions at
the local level. That's why you'll see an
increasing number of local city hubs on Nature
Network, starting with Boston and London.

Nature Network (2)
  • Nature Network is completely free. Here's what
    you can do on it
  • Create your own personal profile page and
    describe yourself and your research.
  • Set up a group for your lab, department or
institution. Or you can form a topic-based group,
such as an RNAi, climate change, or
    nanotechnology group.
  • Join and have discussions with group members.
  • Build your own online network of likeminded
people. and give us your take on what's going on
in your field or in the broader world of science
post comments on other people's blogs

114
Nature Network (3)
  • On the city pages, search and browse our
comprehensive listing of all upcoming seminars
and conferences. We aim to list everything from
niche meetings to screenings of science-based
films and plays. You can even post your own
    events.
  • Read the latest news, views and historical
insights in the news sections of our featured
cities. And then discuss these articles via our
    commenting system.

Virtual Research Environments
  • The purpose of a VRE is to help researchers in
all disciplines manage the increasingly complex
range of tasks involved in carrying out
research. A VRE will provide a framework of
resources to support the underlying processes of
research on both small and large scales,
particularly for those disciplines which are not
well catered for by the current infrastructure.
  • VREs will add value to the research process
across all disciplines by complementing and
inter-working with existing resources and by
being flexible and adaptable to changing
requirements. The approach being taken is based
on an architecture which is extensible and
supports, but does not restrict, the resources
    needed by individual research teams.

124
Virtual Research Environments
  • The concept of a VRE is evolving, and the
intention of this programme is not to produce a
complete VRE, but rather to define and help to
develop the common framework and its associated
standards and to encourage others to work within
this framework to develop and populate VREs with
    applications, services and resources appropriate
    to their needs.
