The NZ Basics
International acclaim New Zealand Sauvignon
Blanc is rated throughout the world as the
definitive benchmark style for this varietal. The
growing recognition for New Zealand Chardonnay,
Pinot Noir, Méthode Traditionelle sparkling
wines, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot
blends is helping to further cement New Zealand's
position as a producer of world class
wines. Diverse styles New Zealand is a
country of contrasts with dense, native forest,
snow-capped mountains and spectacular coastline.
With wine growing regions spanning the latitudes
of 36 to 45 degrees and covering the length of
1000 miles (1,600km), grapes are grown in a vast
range of climates and soil types, producing a
diverse array of styles. The northern hemisphere
equivalent would run from Bordeaux (between the
latitudes of 44 and 46 degrees) down to southern
Spain. Temperate maritime climate New Zealand's
temperate, maritime climate has a strong
influence on the country's predominantly coastal
vineyards. The vines are warmed by strong, clear
sunlight during the day and cooled at night by
sea breezes. The long, slow ripening period helps
to retain the vibrant varietal flavours that make
New Zealand wine so distinctive. Ensuring the
future New Zealand's small population, distant
location and agricultural economy have earned the
country a 'clean, green' image. Visitors often
describe it as 'an unspoiled paradise'. New
Zealand's winemakers and grape growers are
determined to keep it this way. Innovative
practices in the vineyard and winery which
deliver quality in a sustainable and
environmental manner, ensure that New Zealand
meets a growing world demand for wines that have
been produced in a 'clean and green' fashion.

Who are Forrest Wines?

• The Forrest winery was launched in 1988 by
  John and Brigid Forrest and was one of the first
  10 wineries in the area. The business is
  still family owned and Beth Forrest their
  daughter is the next family winemaker
• John was brought up in Marlborough, Picton
  the gateway to the Marlborough Sounds
• John and Brigid are both Doctors. Brigid an MD
  and John a neuro biologist
• The first wine John made was a Cabernet/Merlot
  Rose which he won the Directors Trophy at the Air
  NZ wine awards for in 1990
• Since then John has won New Zealand winemaker
  of the year in 2001 and a consumer critics award
  in 2007
• We were a finalist for the New Zealand winery
  of the year and John Forrest was selected as a
  top 5 finalist for the New Zealand
  winemaker of the year with Winestate Magazine in
  2008.
• John has carefully selected the seven best
  vineyard sites that he could find in Marlborough
  over the past 20 years, we currently own 80
  hectares of premium grape growing land
• Over the past 20 years we have also added
  premium land from Hawkes Bay and Otago to the
  business, allowing us to develop other
  brands for the business

Northbank Vineyard (Awaiting accreditation) Stony
Wairau River Valley Terroir, infused with
youthful clay from the Kaituna Valley, free
draining, cooler with moderate vigour. The clay
enhances the aromatics of the Pinot Gris and
Pinot Noir from this site. Condors Bend and
Winery Vineyard (sustainable winegrowing) Stony
Wairau River Valley terroir, free draining, warm
temperatures and with low fertility. Our Dry
Riesling, The Doctors Riesling and our premium
Sauvignon Blanc all show the minerality of the
stones from this site. Gibsons Creek Vineyard
(sustainable winegrowing) Stony/Sandy Wairau
River Valley Terroir, free draining with low
fertility. Our premium Chardonnay site and key
contributor to the Forrest Sauvignon
Blanc Brancott Vineyard (Awaiting
accreditation) Crushed river gravels mixed with
clay, geologically older terrior. Free draining,
cooler site with moderate fertility. A premium

Brooke Block (sustainable winegrowing) Stony
Wairau River Valley terroir, free draining cooler
site with a higher natural rainfall than our
others. Ideal for developing the herbal aromas of
our Sauvignon Blanc. Mountain View Vineyard
(sustainable winegrowing) River sands and gravels
over laying a clay pan, moderately free draining,
low vigour site with cooler temperatures and
later ripening fruit. This vineyard gives
Sauvignon Blanc pungent blackcurrant cassis
aromas when ripe. Awatere Hills Vineyards Clay
based soil of medium fertility and
drainage. Ideally suited for Pinot Noir and
giving Sauvignon Blanc a distinctive aromatic
tomato leaf character. Belmonte and Riverby
Vineyards (sustainable winegrowing) Silty Wairau
River Gravels, free draining, warm temperatures
and low fertility terroir. Ideal for Sauvignon
Blanc with distinctive citrus and grapefruit
aromas and mineralty.

is about as good as Marlborough sauvignon blanc
gets. They haven't messed around with oak or
malolactic or other technical frills this is the
pure sauvignon blanc flavour the world has come

gooseberry and lightly tropical aromas, while in
the mouth it has more depth and concentration
than most. It's crisp and alive juicy and well

label of our wines pays homage to the Scottish
