Title: MTV Advocacy 7 Points of Entry

1
MTV Advocacy 7 Points of Entry
  • Shaun Mellors
  • International HIV/AIDS Alliance

2
The common goal of MTV advocates is the full
realization of the human right to the highest
attainable standard of health for all people
living with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • MTV advocates recognize that
  • the lack of access to existing treatments is a
gross denial of human rights and we cannot permit
such a situation to repeat itself when
    microbicides and vaccines are developed
  • the ongoing social and economic inequities that
fuel the HIV epidemic mean we need to equip
people with new ways of protecting themselves
    against infection
  • we need better tools for both preventing HIV and
caring for people living with HIV/AIDS if we are
to achieve the human right to health for all
    people.

3
How and why were the 7 points developed?
  • An international Microbicides, Treatment,
Vaccines (MTV) meeting held in Montreal, Canada
in November 2004 and hosted by the Canadian
HIV/AIDS Legal Network, the South African AIDS
Law Project and the International Council of AIDS
    Service Organisations (ICASO)
  • The aim was to facilitate discussion, dialogue
and cross learning between stakeholders in the
three areas so that advocacy and activism could
    be strengthened

4
  • 1. Collective advocacy to donors to fund
    specific issues/areas common to MTV

5
  • 2. Exchange of information, knowledge and skills

6
  • 3. Ensuring and supporting both treatment and
    prevention advocacy in our work

7
  • 4. Holding all stakeholders accountable to
ensure access through an ethical and rights based
    process

8
  • 5. Ensure advocacy and activism in MTV is
    gendered

9
  • 6. More research in the South and cross learning
    by scientists between MTV

10
  • 7. Developing an evolving understanding of
    community partnership (including preparedness
    involvement, mobilization, involvement,
    participation etc)
